I can't seem to make friends with Tofu--have tried it in a salad and cooked as "eggs" this morning. Any suggestions for what else I can do or if there are any substitutes? I feel like I'm the only Vegan who doesn't like Tofu.

My favorite is seitan. I like tofu sometimes, but I don't eat it that often. We don't eat faux meats often in general, but I like the texture of seitan best. That is wheat gluten, not soy though. You could try tempeh which has a good texture and is fermented soy beans.

Also, you definitely have to press the tofu to get a tougher texture and season it for it to be good.

Have you tried frying it? I sometimes treat it like chicken- you can season and sautee it. Alicia has a reciepe for fried tofu in the book, you could try that.

I agree with Rebecca... cook it as if it were chicken; fry, saute, and bake. It's the seasoning and what you cook it in/with that make it taste good. And as Catconsrv said, you really have to press it well to get the water out of it. Good luck!

Wow, thanks so much you guys! This site really is great. I'll try it again-cooked this time-as well as all of the other suggestions. :)

@Shannon- sounds good! I don't use it much either, but I've used it in tofu cream (for pizzas and burritos), in the cheesecake which was super yummy!, in pad thai, and a mac n cheese recipe called for it, blended and mixed with nutritional yeast. I'm going to have to try adding the little I have left over to a smoothie. Plain though, I'm not too much of a fan either. But tofu in the package looks much better than raw chicken in the package, right? :)

hi steph , dont give up on the tofu !! It just takes a while to know how to get the most out of it. I did the cheesecake in TKD , like Jessica , and its totally delish . But for everyday cooking i like to cut it in rectangles or even crumble it and add it to veggie stirfries with shoyu and miso. It soaks up all the yummy flavours , my little boy , age almost 4 , says he likes tofu like that ! and picks it out on his plate to eat first :) :) !

Did you try Tuna sandwidch kinda thats in TKD ? its tempeh , not tofu , but is very very scrummy, IMO xx

To help you on strengthening your friendship with tofu, try buying it pre-seasoned, because that way it already tastes good. I like Wild Wood's baked tofu: http://www.pulmuonewildwood.com/baked.asp

Also, if you have a Whole Foods near you, try their Sesame Tofu at the deli, it's the best dang tofu I've ever had!!

If you don't like tofu, eat tempeh. There's no way tempeh can be icky.

Hope that helps ya! smiley-wink.gif

More great suggestions!

Pamela- I have not tried the Tuna sandwich in TKD, but I most definitely will! Sounds DELISH.

Am also planning on getting tempeh, as it has been mentioned a couple of times now. THANKS ALL. :)
