Hi All! I have been lifting weights for years and am constantly looking to get more protein to build more muscle. I get now about 60g per day. I lift for 45mins to an hour 4-5x per week and am seeing a difference since I started paying attention to protein more, BUT think I still need some other sources. Besides eating nut butters, beans, fortified breads and tempeh, I make a morning shake with hemp protein but that only gives an extra 11g.

Does anyone know of any other vegan protein suppliments? I've heard of gemma pea protein and of course soy protein powder, but I'd like to avoid that.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know anything about body building but I did meet Robert Cheeke earlier this year. He is a vegan professional body builder. I met him at the Vega booth at the Miami marathon. He was promoting Vega and his new book. I know he uses Vega products but you might check out his book for some good advice.

Hi Jessica!

I make a shake using Ultimate Nutrition Protein Powder as a recovery drink after working out. It tastes really good and is suitable for vegans. Also one scoop of it provides 20 grams of protein. Here is the link http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3043967

Good Luck!!! :)

I love Vega products. When I first had the Whole Food Health Optimizer powder I added it to a smoothie and it was far too rich - it really is best just mixed with water. 100% RDA, 26 grams of protein, 100% vegan, and so much more. The creator is vegan and a professional Ironman competitor, and he has some great free resources on nutirtion for athletes -

The maker of VEGA, Brendan Brazier also has a great book called The Thrive Diet with recipes and general info. It is a great resource, I highly recommend you check it out ;)

Im a vegan bodybuilder myself, so far the best raw vegan protein supplement i have came across is sunwarrior raw protein. It has 17g of protein and the amino acid profile rivals any non-vegan source.

Of course there is always soya also, which gets a bad reputation and if anyone wants i will link to my article on the myths of soya. Vega thrive is also good as mentioned but it doesnt taste as nice and is abit grainy to me. The amino acid profile is also better on sunwarrior and its more digestible.

Overall calories are also the key, protein is important but so is total calories. If your not consuming more than your expended you wont gain.

TrueProtein.com has a pea protein powder (gemma I think?) that has 25g of protein per serving and is only $5.09/lb!

I am currently a vegetarian bber transitioning to a vegan diet :)

Ive heard it has a massive sodium content that pea protein powder, although the conclusion on another forum was that it might have been a mislabel.

Powerlifer - it is pretty high in sodium. 600mg for a scoop is what my mix says (100% Gemma Pea Protein) *but* when I am dieting down and watching my sodium I do a 50/50 gemma pea protein and rice protein blend and that cuts the sodium in half. Still not great but hey, it is what it is....$5.09 a lb. haha. I can't be too picky for that price!
