My weakness is CHEESE!

About three weeks ago I decided to do a cleansing diet of nothing but mostly raw vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. My plan was to do it for only a week to clean out my system. So after my week was over I was feeling pretty proud of myself. I decided to celebrate with a homemade beef burrito. MISTAKE! I felt terrible for the rest of the night. I haven't had any meat since.

So other than my burrito laps I've been doing really good with only one exception: CHEESE! I miss cheese. I want cheese! I've tried the Follow Your Heart mozzarella cheese and I didn't really like it. And I swear the cottage cheese was calling my name at the grocery store. And I had to fight off the blue cheese dressing; I almost gave in. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me with my cheese issue? The only thing that's saving me right now is that picture of the cute little cow on page 35 of The Kind Diet.

I feel your cheese-withdrawal pain! I am originally from the midwest, and grew up on a dairy farm! Giving up cheese was one of the biggest events of my life! (not really, but it seemed like it at the time). I craved cheese for about 2 weeks, straight! What got me through was Alicia's Peanut Butter cups! So yummy!!!! Somehow, it filled my cheese void. I still used "veggie shreds" cheese at the time, and veggie cheese slices on sandwhiches. That helped too, but mainly it was the PB cups! I miss cheese, but it's not a constant thought. I have found other things that I love instead, like avocado. Avaocado is also a great cheese substitute on sandwhiches, etc.

Hope this helps.

I agree, avocado totally fills the cheese void. I've been eating lots of guac because the creaminess really helps. (I just went my first whole week vegan) And I noticed follow your heart isnt as bad once its melted. Still doesn't replace cheese for me though. I asked my whole foods to start carrying daiya because I really want to try it and might even drive 20 miles to the next wf to get some for this "make your own pizza and ice cream sundae" party I got invited to. Lol they would invite me to the the week I become vegan.

I've also been using nutritional yeast which also seems to develop more flavor if it's baked. I mixed it with some tofutti garlic and herb cream cheese and make a little pizza on a pita the other night and it was awesome. I also tried to make parm by grinding up equal parts of almonds and the nutritional yeast and adding salt to taste. On its own its nothing special but I mixed it with breadcrumbs and topped this baked pasta dish with it and oh man it was so good.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'll definately try the avocado. It is the creaminess of cheese that I think I'm missing. I never thought about using avocado to fill in for cheese. Great idea! I'll also try the daiya cheese and the using the nutritional yeast and tofutti cream cheese. Thanks so much! Oh and I was planning on making the Alicia's Peanut Butter Cups this weekend. They look SOOOOOOO yummy!

Hi All,

A combo that i've found really good for the cheese craving (and being based in Aus, we don't seem to have quite the number of substitutes in easy reach) esp. for melted cheese (i mainly use this for pizza's and things) is to use a combination of tofutti creme cheese and a good quality hommus...it gives that creamy richness for some reason - i think the sesame seeds in the hommus are a big part of it...anyway i don't know whether it's just me that find that, but it could be worthwhile giving it a try on your next pizza
