hey!! so i have been reading a bit online about going shampoo (and conditioner) free and how people are loving it. usually the routine is to use baking soda dissolved in water instead of shampoo. for conditioner there are a lot of different options people seem to use. i'm thinking about doing this, so my question is...

do any of you kind-lifers do this? any tips or advice to share? thanks!!

Hey, I did this :-)

Baking soda w/ water for Shampoo, then Apple Cider Vinegar and water for Conditioning/rinse.

I have very thick wavy hair that has the potential to grow very long and very wild very quickly. But it is a mixture of oily and dry. very strange... And at some point I started to get white flakes in the mix.

I started the no shampoo stuff and it was the best thing I could have done. Saved me tons of money but my hair had never been happier. It wasn't smelly from the ACV and no shampooing like I thought it would be. It was sooo soft and manageable. White flakes + oily stuff was gone.

You'll notice I'm talking past tense. There is a point while doing this that your hair sort of goes through a detox. So it is Great for a while and then you hit that wall. I think everyone goes through it and the trick is to get past it and keep going, then you will never need shampoo again. Or so they say. But i couldn't STAND, when I hit that point my hair turned brittle and hard to brush.

Since then I've switched to a little of both. Natural Shampoos, once in a while conditioner. And a baking soda or ACV rinse a couple times a month.

PS, just to note since eating more greens and raw foods, and mostly vegan, my hair doesn't even require conditioner but once a week or so. Before i did that, I was using the ACV and Baking soda a lot more.

I tried this for about 3 weeks and it did not work for me. My hair was alway oily and nasty looking. I really wanted it to work based on all the things I had been reading but no matter what I tried it just wasn't for me. I've since gone to using a very gentle, natural baby shampoo and am very happy with it. The trick for me, though, is that I have to use kind of a lot of it. But I don't need to condition or anything. Another thing I hadn't heard of and found through my research of going shampoo-free is the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) for washing your face. I've been doing this for about 3 months now and am quite happy with the results. Just thought I'd mention it if you are looking for some alternatives to using commercial products. A google search of "oil cleansing method" will bring up lots of info. Good luck!

Baking Soda is not good if you colored your hair. It will fade it. Although I do know you can mix a little in shampoo to clarify. You can buy Sulfate free shampoo.

I think the best thing is to just not shampoo too much. I have very long thick hair and I only shampoo 2 times a week. A good rinse with warm water is usually all I do. If it feels tangly then I put a little conditioner in it.
