where should we stay in new york for our family vacation?

help! i am planning a family vacation and we thought we would go to new york since there are so many options for food. but, we are used to relaxing beach vacations. here is what i am looking for: staying somewhere nice and relaxing by a beach that is family friendly but still close to the city so we can eat at all the wonderful restaurants and see a few shows.

I would recommend Long Beach, NY. They have a brand new hotel, the Allegria, right on the ocean/boardwalk. The ocean is beautiful there. That hotel is right near the train station which takes 50-55 minutes to get into NYC (Penn Station).
