Hi everyone,

This summer we've been living in Ecuador, South America and while here I've been doing lots of reading and gathering information about changing my diet to vegetarian -ideally vegan. I'm going back home to Canada in a week and I'm looking forward to grocery shopping with a new lifestyle in mind.

I have TKD book on order, and I cannot wait to read it once I get home..but I'm curious to know...what types of staples are on your grocery list? There are lots of things I see people refer to on this blog, but have NO idea what they are.

What are those things you love? What is TEMPEH? What is the best butter replacement?

Thanks in advance, I LOVE this blog it is such a great resource :)

Definitely the Vegenaise (high omegas kind) by Follow Your Heart! I like Earth Balance as a butter replacement, I don't rely on too many other processed things tho...mostly bean, whole grains like brown rice or quinoa, and lots o' veggies. :)

You will love the book! I got mentally prepared before mine arrived, too!

There are staples you will want to purchase and they are listed in TKD. Some of them include, Brown rice, whole wheat couscous (found in the bulk section- those big bins where you add your own label). Brown rice syrup, agave nectar (both are sweetners found near honey or sugar). Earth Balance buttery spread is the best butter replacement, found in the cooler. If you are new to veganism, you might want foods that look like familiar things like tofu dogs or Boca Vegan burgers (the freezer section), but you don't want to eat them everyday.

Enjoy the book and all the new possibilities! And I'm not sure where you are in Canada, but there are lots of vegan restaurants in the Vancouver area. (I will be visiting there and we had to do a little research.)
