Hi, I was diagnosed with bladder Ca last year and I'm currently in remission....being pumped with chemo was not the nicest of experiences :O( I've never smoked in my life but have had some pretty strong hints that this might have been caused by toxins from 'passive' smoking...I'm starting out on TKL so I'm v naive but any suggestions for natural foods/ products that help boost my bodies defences against this disease? Many thanks :)

Most of the work that we require of our kidneys involves removing the byproducts of protein metabolism. When we eat protein, the digestive process breaks off the amino acids that form a chain and leave a nitrogenous byproduct as a form of waste. This nitrogen-based molecule is what the kidneys need to pull out of the blood and is the main constituent of urine.

Excessive consumption of concentrated protein similar to that found in animal foods taxes the ability of the kidneys to perform this function adequately. Improperly processed waste products from the blood that get deposited by the kidneys into the bladder can irritate its lining. This irritation as a capacity of initiating all sorts of nasty reactions.

A plant-based diet that does not contain excessive amounts of animal protein allows the proper functioning of the kidneys and the proper chemical balancing of the urine. We would assume that exposure to secondhand smoke would have less of a impact on the bladder then dietary choices due to the nature and amount of waste products that result from those exposures.

I would suggest that you don't worry too much about the air and focus on the food.

Hi Malcolm - the above link is to an article by Dr. Weil about using integrative medicine in tx cancer - its not comprehensive, but talks briefly about the importance of plant based diet, omega oils, supplements, stress etc....he is pretty conservative in the world of alternative medicine, and this book may be a nice place for you to start.

diet is super important, but also your environment. simple things like making your bedroom into a more environmentally "safe" haven can go a long way - remove the tv or other electical stuff, don't sleep anywhere NEAR your cell phone, remove syntetic stuff like furniture made from particle board that can "off-gas" chemicals etc....

the above link is kinda the idea - the theory behind it is you can't "toxin" proof yourself in everyday life (usually!) so at least give yourself 8 hours while you sleep to be exposed to as little as possible.

And no matter how you decided to eat, do it organic as possible! people will do things like start drinking green juices for health - but if you aren't getting the juice from organic veggies, you are getting a magnified dose of whatever chemicals were used on the non-organic ones in your juice! If you are still eating meat/dairy, make sure its good quality organic. And if you are trying to go vegan and not sure where to start, its my humble opinion that dairy is worse for your health and more linked to disease then meat, so really think about omitting that first if you are easing in slowly.

also stress is huge - look into tai chi or meditation classes....

Please check into raw vegan diets as well. Raw food oxygenates your body, and cancer cannot grow in an oxygen-rich environment. Good luck!

Hi Malcolm...We have this in our family and here are some tips: the more green veggies the better, lots of pure water and absolutely no dairy. I am glad that you are doing tkd. Also, if you need help with your skincare (your bodies other source of food), let me know. Then, when you have done those things, you have controlled what you can and can focus on doing things you enjoy. Please know you have my thoughts.

I am fortunate that the disease was picked up early at a low grade/ stage and I'm peaceful about the situation....but I feel moved and humbled at the response from the TKL community..many thanks. smiley-embarassed.gif
