So.. as far as whole grains (rice, corn, millet, barely, quinoa) that we are supposed to go crazy and eat all day.. is a corn tortilla ok in this group? I'd assume so .... it's just stone ground corn and lime.

Thoughts?

Shelly, you can purchase whole sprouted grain tortillas. The brands are Alvaredo Bakery and Ezekiel These are available at health food stores and Whole Foods These are excellent and both companys bale other breads, too.

I think you mean to ask if corn is a whole grain. Any foods made from grains are no longer the whole grain, just made from them. Ex: brown rice noodles are not brown rice

(but I do not know the answer. I have heard yes, but alicia never said so.. so....)

No... that isn't what I meant. In the book it says to eat whole grains every day but whole grain products a few times a week.. for example:

brown rice is a whole grain, brown rice pasta (any pasta) is a whole grain product.

oatmeal is a whole grain, whole wheat bread is a whole grain product

quinoa is a whole grain, flour tortillas are a whole grain product

However... corn tortillas confuse me.. I think they may be whole grain and not a whole grain product.

I always thought if corn tortillas are made with corn flour or corn meal they are NOT the whole grain. The sprouted whole grain corn tortillas that Patty Sartin wrote are ones I've bought ( Ezekiel) which on the package if I remember correctly says sprouted whole corn kernal or sprouted whole grain--something to that extent. I found them in the refrigerated section since they don't have preservatives. Maybe you can get those and keep in fridge so they stay fresh.

corn tortilla's are like white bread, and you'd want wholegrain bread.

there are plenty of whole grain tortilla's, these are the prefered ones if you eat tortilla's :)

well if they aren't actually baked,or at a minimal heat, why not have them? I've been making tacos with them-azuki beans, quinoa, butternut squash, kale, gomasio sesame seeds.Only thing is they take w hile to digest,so don't neglect your fiber!

i don't understand why corn tortillas would not be considered whole grain. they are made from corn. obviously sprouted ones are better, but corn tortillas are a whole grain product.
