once opened what is the refrigerator life of these 2 products? i opened both early spring but didn't do much w/either over the summer. now that fall is here i'm ready for more soups, etc. but how do i know if it/they are good or bad yet? don't want to consume anything expired. and of course these are my 2 most expensive staples:( thanks for help
I'd say they are fine. I have a tub of miso that is at least a year old, and I still use it. The miso & plums are sortof self-preserving foods. I'd say, unless you taste a difference in quality or they are visibly unpleasant looking, they are probably fine.
Dottie, I had questions too so I wrote to Eden Foods. The plums have no expiration date---- nor do they need refrigeration. I haven't bought miso yet so I'm unfamiliar with its shelf life.
I just read this the other day: "The Japanese umeboshi plum, [...], is really an apricot, dried and salted, and has, appropriately, a shelf life of a hundred years." from The Lives of the Trees by Diana Wells
I'd say the plums will outlast you!
A hundred years! Amazing! I wish I could find a place to buy umeboshi plums. I live in Bangladesh and health food stores are nonexistant - it's hard enough buying maple syrup!!
