I am so excited from reading the book and in my 3rd week of eating great! I want to make the umeboshi tea? I am calling all around and no one has them! :( I even went to two Asian stores yesterday with no luck. All they seem to have is the umeboshi paste, will that work for the tea? I would rather do it right or not at all.

hi paula - i think most health food stores carry them, but i'm in calufornia, so not sure about other states.. you can get umeboshi online even in amazon :) paste works fine, and if you are going to make cure all tea, i use about 1 tsp of paste since paste has more content than umeboshi itself (line any nuts to nut butter). when you buy from local asian stores, make sure to read labels - pickled asian stuff are loaded with preservatives! if you purchase from eden or ohsawa or other good health brand, usually they have no preservatives of course.

Hi Chickpea,

I went on line to order the plums but they were pickled is this how they all come. Because like Paula, I want to try this recipe but only if I have the right ingrediants.

Thank you Chickpea. I think I will pick up the past then. I am anxious to start the weight loss tea. I think I will still order online so I have them for future.

hi michelle,

yes, umeboshi are pickled plum. you can check p.71 of the kind diet - very nice overview on umeboshi :) by the way, i love cooking umeboshi with brown rice once in a while - 1 umeboshi to 3 cups of non-cooked rice. it makes rice amazingly fragrant and sweet!

also paula, enjoy weight loss tea and umeboshi tea!

Oh, one more question. So, I went to the store to get the paste, shoyu and daikon and was so anxious to make my tea this morning. I think I used 1/2 ts, I'll use 1 tomorrow. The tea directions in the book, did not say to strain the tea. I used a fine grater and hoped that is right. I then poured the tea through a mesh seive. It would be crazy, difficult to drink the shreds..right?

Just remember one very important difference between plum and paste: the paste does not have the healing capacities that the plums have.... Umeboschi paste is for seasoning more than healing powers...

Good to know, thanks! I will have to wait to take the tea and order them then. I have called all the Whole Foods in my area and they only have paste. You strain the carrot and daikon from the tea, right?
