help with fuel...

when i say fuel, i don't mean car fuel or anything like that...

I'm talking about when I get hounded with questions about being a vegan.

A group of friends I see occassionally are not supportive at all of my lifestyle. I am the kind of person who bites their toungue and never preaches the benifits of being vegan unless i'm continiously prompted.

I have a lot of knowledge about the ethical reasons I am a vegan, animal welfare etc i'm sure i don't need to go into it,

But admittedly, I know little about how being vegan is helping the enviorment. I just know I am. Ha.

So of course, when i get bombarded by so called friends who already intensely dislike my eating habits (probably because we have to order a few vegetable dishes when we go out for dinner), I get shut down and usually am left red faced because I just lack the knowledge to back up my argument

I heard that the meat industry causes more fossil fuels than any other industry. I also know that vegetarian diets save water.

Does anyone have any more fuel I can throw at these carnivious ignorant people? Also, how exactly am i saving water??

Cheers,

monet

Read Eating Animals. TONS of great info.

Here's a link:

http://www.enviroveggie.com/

Now, I did not read this link, so I am not endorsing any info contained therein, and I don't know the reliability of the source, but I believe I saw a simple basic formula about water usage.

But seriously, read Eating Animals. Yes, it expands on issues of compassion, but also raises good environmental issues as well. A great doc on the state of our oceans created through overfishing - The End of the Line. AMAZING! I highly recommend it, definitely a huge environmental focus, Earth being mostly ocean and all.

Be prepared, Monet. Eating Animals might make you angry, or sad. The End of the Line is available on Netflix, if you have it. Good luck. Sorry your friends have to suffer through eating some actual vegetables when you're around!

You are saving water because of all the water that goes into growing extra crops just to feed livestock! Then all the water that is needed to sustain those animals! So much of the water used for the crops runs off because our soil is so depleted. The less crops, the less fertilizer and pesticide, the less water contamination, and there you go for a better environment! People mistakenly think that if we all go veg that we will have to plant MORE crops which would not be feasible, but it is the opposite! At least 60% of all the corn and soy that we grow goes to feeding livestock. Crazy!

I saw Alicia on youtube talking to an audience from Google and she stated that in order to produce 1 steak, it requires 6 months of showering water...crazy huh??? And its 20-28 billion gallons of oil per year for the beef industry alone. These facts usually get some startled looks and responses! It is goof information to have and share when the topic comes up. Good luck!
