I need help! When I was younger I had an obsession with makeup. I bought so much and now I have a huge excess. I know that a lot of it has harsh chemicals in it and is not vegan. I really want to throw it all out, but most of it has a lot left, and I feel really wasteful. I also know that the makeup is really old, like years old, and could carry bacteria. I want to start fresh with all vegan makeup, but I'm stuck. Any suggestions?

Yikes, if it's over a year old, I'd toss it. You wouldn't eat moldy food, why would you put bacteria ridden old make up on your face or near your eyes? No need to feel guilty, just time to move onward and forward. :)

maybe you would feel less wasteful if you scooped all the old crusty bacteria ridden makeup out of the cases they are in and then put the plastic containers into recycle - that way you are only throwing out the old dirty chemical gook but giving new life to the containers it all came in!

That's a great idea to recycle them, and like Cassi said - throw it out, that's way too long. However, make sure you're aware of your city's recycling requirements. For instance, in my city, only #1 and #2 plastic bottles are recyclable. That's it, no other plastics, including other 1's and 2's. My old city's recycling center would have to either sort through and toss stuff that wasn't accepted, or, if it came in a clear bag and was really, really mixed up, it would have to throw out the whole bag because they couldn't sort through it for just a few things.
