In the U.S. Senate Bill will criminalize Food Production

16 Nov

"S.510″ U.S. Senate bill that could criminalize saving seeds and outlaw backyard garden food production. It is being called "the most dangerous bill in the history of the United States of America.

NaturalNews.com

Senate Bill 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, has been called "the most dangerous bill in the history of the United States of America." It would grant the U.S. government new authority over the public's right to grow, trade and transport any foods. This would give Big brother the power to regulate the tomato plants in your backyard. It would grant them the power to arrest and imprison people selling cucumbers at farmer's markets. It would criminalize the transporting of organic produce if you don't comply with the authoritarian rules of the federal government.

This law would also give the U.S. government the power to arrest any backyard food producer as a felon (a "smuggler") for merely growing lettuce and selling it at a local farmer's market.

It also sells out U.S. sovereignty over our own food supply by ceding to the authority of both the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Codex Alimentarius.

I've heard of this as well. They want to accept a law like this in Holland + all of Europe too! I have no idea what it acctually means for our daily life.. I can't believe that we wouldn't be able to buy "real" organic produce anymore and vitamin pills etc... If anyone on this forum has any idea what's going on with this bill and similar ones...please share your knowledge! I'm very interested aswell! :-)

I have one word: Monsanto.

Ann, exactly what I was thinking. It is sad that our government allows this stuff to happen and even helps it along. People think the government is looking out for us, but they are just out to make a buck. This is awful.

Thanks, I'll look more into this in a minute :-)

But can't we do something about this if we all work together!? I mean I've been looking online, and there are some petitions you can sign (which i did) but other than that there's not a lot we, as citizens, are doing to keep this bill from happening... or is there?

Lianne, if you go to the link above there is information at the bottom about contacting your representatives. This is probably your best bet.

there are groups like the above that are good guides as to how to help - the most powerful thing is money it seems, so live your life with your beliefs - don't buy gmo products, don't but stuff produced by monsanto, support your local organic CSAs etc...these actions will do more in the end then signing a petition - you might think its too small, but if enough do it it does make a big financial impact - sadly what is right is often not the bottom line, what brings in money is. Sigh.

Haven't seen this issue before but here are some sites to look at: Non-GMO Prodject, The Center for Food Safety's True Food Network, and Organic Valley.
