Hi:) So my boyfriends Grandma is having a hard time grasping our lifestyle choice of being vegan. We have a 1 year old son and she worries that we, as a family are not being healthy by being vegan. I'm wondering if anyone has any good suggestions for books that do a good job of explaining veganism and how it is a healthy lifestyle (except TKD of course... I have that one!:) ).
Thanks for any tips!
The China Study is an amazingly informative read on the absolute health benefits of a plant based diet. There is a lot of scientific info but it is presented in a very understandable way. You dont have to be a doctor or nutritionist to benefit from this book. I read TKD first and then The China Study. Both books changed my life and helped me tune into my body in such a healthy way. Definitely read China Study if you haven't already!
I have one called "Becoming Vegetarian" (by Vesanto Melina, R.D., Brenda Davis, R.D., and Victoria Harrison, R.D.) that was super helpful to me when we all went veg as a family. I know there is one called "Becoming Vegan" (by the same authors, I believe). I can't really speak for the vegan one, but the vegetarian one was great - lots of info on how much of what nutrients you need, how much of that nutrient different sources provide, etc. I also think its nice since its written by dieticians, there's a nice amount of credibility there.
Thanks! I appreciate the reccomendations:) I've wanted to read "The China Study" for quite some time, just haven't got around to it! haha... But I will!! And I will check out "Becoming Vegan" too! Thanks again:)

This Crazy Vegan Life by Christina Pirello and Living Vegan for Dummies are both really good informative books that also include some recipes. The other cookbook that I use on a regular basis along with the Kind Diet, is Clean Food by Terry Walters. She has some really healthy yummy recipes and she just came out with a new one called Clean Start that im asking for for xmas! Also if you want a fun motivating one Skinny Bitch is always a good one and its what made me want to even be vegetarian in the first place, and then The Kind Diet was that push that really made me do it! Hope that helps!
Jaime - there are also some good documentaries that talk about the health benefits - The Beautiful Truth, The Gerson Miracle, Foodmatters. Try watching those and see if you think they would be helpful for her. And, Forks OVer Knives is opening in March. You can also find some videos of Campbell and Esselstyn speaking about health benefits on youtube.
Thanks:) I really appreciate all the info and advice! It's funny because she (Grandma) thinks our way of eating is unhealthy..... yet, her other grandchildren's kids (11 and 4), are conatantly eating candy and prepackaged foods like kraft dinner, yet she has no issue with that. I find it to be so weird!
That is what is so strange about a lot of people who like to question what you're eating. They can say the most ridiculous things while sitting there drinking a giant soda and eating nasty fast food, or a giant soda and a bag of chips, or a candy bar, or a pastry, etc. It's really kind of laughable (or it would be if it wasn't so sad).
haha... ya, I get pretty frustrated to say the least. I don't freak out on people or anything....but it just eats me alive sometimes! One day, when they have diabetes and heart disease they will realize that what I was saying wasn't so crazy after all! haha... Of course I don't wish that on anybody, but if people are going to be ignorant, and not even try to make a change, that's their own fault.
I bought "The China Study" btw, so I will be reading that! Might take awhile, as I have a very needy and whiny 1 yr old right now... haha. And I'm not much of a bookworm either... haha. But I will read it! Once I read it I will buy another one of the suggestions here! :)
