Hi ladies! I need your help! This weekend my mom, brother, uncle, and I are getting together and going out for dinner this Sunday.
My uncle left it open to us to suggest where to eat, but I'm sort of at a loss... Any suggestions as to where to go, where both my mom and I who are vegan, and the other two guys can both eat food that we enjoy? I'm weary of certain places where, although something may say 'vegetarian', it may have egg or milk or butter in or on it. I know I can ask, but I don't want to end up just sitting there. Awkward!
We'll be meeting up in Edmonton (Alberta), just for a heads up on the suggestions.
Definitely look on Happy Cow website. I typed in your location and there are a bunch of places that are at least "vegan friendly." If your family is open to diverse foods, I saw an Ethiopian restaurant. I love Ethiopian food and they are vegan friendly definitely. We have taken lots of people and they love it, even meat eaters! It is not spicy usually so no worries about that. Just tasty!
I've looked on happy cow, and a couple of the restaurants are completely unavailable.
Does anyone have vegan friendly ideas for eating at "normal" restaurants?
I'm not sure if you're planning ot go fancy or casual, but for casual, I if I recall, you have a Red Robin's in Edmonton, right? ( I'm in Calgary so I get up ther eonce in a while) Not the most healthy choice but from previous threads I believe their veggie burger is vegan. Indian restaurants are always easy if you like indian food... by default their menu is at least 1/2 veggie... or Vietnamese (some restaurants have no veggie options so check into it first) but as long as you leave off the fish sauce the veggie options are vegan. The other thing too, if you'r egoing somewhere really upscale, always just ask, Chefs in those kind of restaurants are usually always up the the challenge or will at least have default fall-back to make you when you ask... just remember you're not the first person to have asked for a veg*n option and if the place is worth spending your money at, they'll accomodate you. :) Best of luck!
At a nicer restaurant, I would definately call a couple days ahead of time. They are usually happy to make you something off menu if they've had sufficient warning. Sometimes you get the best meal that way. And, it alleviates the awkwardness of having to discuss it at the table with a waiter who may not even know what vegan means. Good luck.
wish I would have seen this earlier!! The Blue Plate Diner in Edmonton is AMAZING!!! Great Veg options for sure...you must make a reservation. ( I love Happy Cow too!!) By the way Julios Barrio has great Veg Chilli...I had great food last time I was in Edmonton
