What makes red wine vegan or non?

So, I have always considered red wine to be vegan friendly. Fermented grapes right? But the other day I was perusing the organic section at the wine store, and saw some that were labelled as vegan. What gives? Are there animal products hiding in my wine? Anyone know?

Thanks,,. Kim.

It's due to the fining process. Common fining agents are gelatin and egg whites, which therefore make it unsuitable for vegans. Barnivore is a great site for finding out whether your favourite wines are vegan - many are so don't worry! Most Champagne and sparkling wines are too - yay! Aaaaaand lot's of spirits, beers and ciders are vegan, so you'll never be stuck for anything to drink. Also, more and more brands are labelling their products. Just be sure to check before guzzling;)

Kim, here is a link to a blog post I wrote in January. It links back to barnivore.com too. That is a really helpful site when choosing veg/vegan alcohol. One more thing to consider and feel good about. http://wp.me/p12ELM-4f
