Kombucha Tea

Lately I've been drinking a couple bottles of kombucha tea a week (Synergy brand). The bottle says it's really good for you and lists all the benefits, but I've read that some people have had some health issues resulting from it. I know it contains a little alcohol due to the fermentation process, but other than that, is this safe to drink on a daily basis? Is there any caffeine in it?

Hey!

I used to drink kombucha on a regular basis too, however Synergy was pulled off the shelves at Whole Foods for a little while. Kombucha is made from tea and sugar - the cultures feed off of the sugar, so it probably has caffeine in it, although not too much. Why are you drinking Kombucha? For the health benefits or for the taste? The probiotic content is the reason kombucha is good for you. I don't know if you shop at Whole Foods, but there are some other options available there. They now make a drink much like Kombucha sold in the same section that is made from culture coconut water : http://earthsongorganics.com/kevita/faq but my favorite product is this: http://inner-eco.com/ it is the only vegan probiotic suplement I have found, and one sip tastes like a powerful punch of yogurt, as strange as that sounds. I drink an ounce or two every morning. Hope that was somewhat helpful!

thanks for the info! those other suggestions look good too. Syngery is back on the shelves, but it doesn't have any alochol in it anymore (which is why it was pulled). I drink it for the health benefit, and the taste...it also just makes you feel good!

My only thought would be to stay away from any that contain a lot of sugar. I know High Country makes some great kombucha, and their finished product has only trace amounts of sugar (neccesary in the fermentation process). Seems like I've seen other brands that have a lot more.

kombucha is safe to drink, but expensive from the shop.

Make it at home and save money. the directions are easy to find.

I also drink the Synergy Kombucha from Whole Foods. 2, sometimes 3 bottles per week. I am wondering if this is making me gain weight. Something is making me gain weight and the one of the things that I've been doing differently is drinking this tea. (Another thing is I love the Almond Bites "ice cream" type of treat. But, I used to eat the rice dream "ice cream" sandwiches and those never were a problem).

Kombucha doesnt contain caffeine and yeah its safe. I prefer water kefir for repopulating the gut flora though.

Hi PL:) Have you ever had coconut water kefir? The only thing I see in local stores is cow or goat milk kefir. I also saw a recipe for rejuvalac in a raw cookbook. Know anything bout that?smiley-wink.gif

Hey Febgirl, i havent tried coconut kefir but i have tried water kefir and yeah its great for repopulating the gut flora.

Store bought kefir is usually dead and has very little good bacteria and is filled with preservtives etc.

Rejuvelac is ok but requires wheat berries etc. So i prefer water kefir, cultured veggies, miso, tempeh etc.

Aswell as prebiotics to feed and stimulate the activity of the gut flora. You can only repopulate so many strains with fermented foods and there are literally thousands of strains of gut flora.
