Hey everyone.. I just got Alicia's book, and i loved it. I finally found a book with real advice, in a easy way to understand.. Im just starting, so please, help me to complete my goal, and become a succesfull vegan. Nobody in my family want me to going vegan, because they are involved in a "eating meet its good society." I want to change that, because I want to have healthy children, and I want to be healthy too..

So, please, give some advice to this nervious chick. Who is rediscovering the world.

HI, Betty and welcome!

Yes, Alicia's book is fabulous. :) You came to the right place for support and help with your goal. I think you'll find that everyone here is very helpful, warm and amazing. It's truly a wonderful community. Again, Alicia did a fabulous job. :)

It does make it much more difficult when no one in your family is going vegan with you, so you'll likely need more support and these online communities will be a good source. Don't be nervous though, you about to do the best thing you can possibly ever do for yourself (take it from a physician), animal welfare and the environment.

If you have a few moments you may be interested in taking a look at my blog, particularly a section on our "mini-experiment" that will be starting in two weeks on Jan 15th. It is an experiment in which people who are currently consuming either a SAD diet (std American diet), a flexitarian diet or a vegetarian diet convert to a vegan diet for 60 days. (I only require 60 days for the experiment but I have done this before with patients and they almost always stay with it) I measure various health parameters prior to the onset of the experiment, at the 30d mark and at end. The participants will be blogging about their experience the entire 60 days sharing the experience with my readers. I hope to have bios, etc up by the end of next week! (Actually, I hope to have a lot more done site wide by then, but I digress) I thought it may be interesting since you will be on a similar paths. Also there are lots of resources on there that maybe useful to you. Also, if you are looking for something you would like to see but don't feel free to ask. I can try to add it. :) Best Wishes and KIndest Regards, Jenn (www.theplantrx.com)

these days there is soooooo much info that a vegan diet better for you ( not to mention the planet ) but alot of folk are still in denial like your family and alot of mine . You can watch Foods That Kill on You tube and maybe get your family to watch - its v enlightening and informative.

Hi Betty,

it's exactly the same with my family. Some of them are even concerned that I'll get seriously ill. I think they'll get used to the way of eating and living we prefer if we give them some time. (Or maybe not, considering people are still concerned about me not eating meat or fish, which i haven't for the last seven or eight years).

Don't forget to watch your intake of vitamins, minerals etc. as some new vegans tend to adopt a lopsided diet at first. But once you get on track, it's very easy to get everything you need from plant based food.

All the best,

xx

Hi Betty!

I have been a vegetarian for most of my life, but just like you, I too just converted over to vegan. I am also the only one in my family, but we can do it! Everytime that I have been in a situation where I have received pressure from my family, I just think about all the horrible things that we have done to our planet, our bodies and our poor, helpless, little animals.

My mom was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer last year, she has since been given a clean bill of health but attributes her success to God and going Vegan. Before she started Chemo or had surgery she had reduced the size of both her tumors by 2 and 1.5 inches in diametre! She is proof that a Vegan lifestyle is 1) healthier and 2) can reverse the damage that a meat and dairy mean diet has done.

To help me stay on the right path, I try and eat before I go out anywhere, so I can literally be "satisfied" with just having a salad or healthy snacks on a menu. Also, you will want to keep this up because you will look awesome and feel amazing!

Keep it up girl, you can do it!

Welcome, Betty! We are so happy to have you here, in this community with us, and supporting a healthier way of life for all, with us. I truely believe that veganism is better for the animals, your health, and the environment. My personal motivation for going vegan was all about the animals. But, I've since enjoyed SO many wonderful health benefits, as well. I feel so great and have never been happier, in part because I am finally living in alignment with my beliefs of being kind to animals, and in part because of the amazing health benefits. You'll start to experience some of the health benefits right away, and many more over time. :) You already see how great Alicia's book is...how helpful, informative, and user-friendly and I think you'll find this blog/web-site to be very informative (as well as supportive). There is always new and really useful information on nutrition, products, really cool stuff, motivational stories, etc. You are going to love it. Anyway, like you, I'm the only vegan in my immediate family....none of my friends are either (except for my best friend does "flirt" with it and she is truly amazing!!). But my family and friends are accepting and supportive of me. They don't necessarily cook my food at holidays, etc., even though they offer to try....but I just offer to bring my own food and everyone is very accepting of that and very happy with that. My husband is extremely supportive and is very proud of me. He is not vegan at all, but totally helped restock the kitchen for me. My point is, I totally love veganism, as a whole lifestyle, and have no troubles with being successful in it, even though no one else in my circle is, and you can enjoy the same experience. You can do it!! Over time, your family will see how healthy you are. :)
