I hear weekly stories about fasting, detoxing, or cleansing. I just celebrated my one-year vegan anniversary, and throughout the experience I have become more and more interested in Macrobiotics. I would like to know what the opinion is in the Macrobiotic community on cleanses or fasting. Is it recommended? encouraged? ANy thoughts?

Hi Inner Winds :)

I pretty much follow Macrobiotics all the time, although I am currently doing sort-of a juice cleanse. I am having lots of green / vegetable / fruit / wheatgrass juices and then having 1 "proper" meal a day - normally something like pressed salad, brown rice, arame stir fry...or a big bowl of miso soup with mochi croutons...that sort of thing.

I can only speak for myself, but it has really "cleansed" me! My skin has become spotty and I can basically feel the whole thing working its way through my body.

The macrobiotic counsellors - and from research and reading, reading, reading (!) all recommend that you do some sort of cleanse / fast at certain stages, particularly after over-indulging, illnesses etc. I have done the brown rice fast too which can be hard, but certainly worth it.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you would like to know anything else :)
