Hi! I'm here looking for support for being a vegan (and give support as I'm able). I feel so alone sometimes! I haven't read the book yet, but I saw it talked about on Oprah awhile back, and I'm going to see if I can check it out from the library soon!
My four children and I are vegan. I've been vegan for 9 years, and my older two children became vegan I guess about half a year or so after I did. My younger two have always been vegan. My husband finally toward the end of last year stopped eating very much meat (he cut out dairy a long time ago and does't eat eggs either), so he is very close to being vegan, but he doesn't have any convictions about it, it's a health thing for him (I'm very excited about his decision, though!).
I've been getting discouraged hearing my friends talk about "all" these people who used to be vegan and then stopped because they realized they needed to eat *meat* to be healthy. :-/ And I've been thinking, my goodness, woe to me if I were to ever feel that way. :*-( I would hate to eat meat, I would cry. So that's why I decided to check out this forum!
Anyway, that's a little bit about me!
Hey JVM,
Welcome to the kind life. I applaud your efforts to keep yourself and your family healthy! This is a great website because we help each other along, share ideas, frustrations, etc. I feel how you do when people say they used to be vegan. I can't even consider another way of life ever again! But then again, I made this decision because although yes, it led to a greater level of health, it also relieves animal suffering and benefits the environment. I think people who quit are A) not serious enough to do the research to make sure they are getting the right nutrients and B) aren't re-educating themselves as to why they did it in the 1st place. Human beings are fickle creatures and tend to forget.
Talk to ya!

Hello, gentleveganmom! You have certainly come to the right place! The first thing I would like to say is congrats on being such a great Mom and taking care of yourself and your children's health so very well. =) I'm a physician and I can tell you that you are doing the best thing you can possibly do for yourself and your family. Happy to hear your hubby is jumping aboard as well. Once he sees and feels the health benefits he will totally get it. :)
I understand when you hear those things it can be very disenchanting. Th eone thing to keep in mind when you hear these things is that the data is the data and it is irrefutable. It is impossible to deny the health benefits and to do so is nothing short of irresponsible. There are a couple other physicians who are members here and I'm sure they would agree. This is the very reason I am currently doing a health study on plant-based diets (I'm not sure if you saw my forum post about it) in which people switch form either a standard american diet (SAD) or a vegetarian to a vegan diet for 60 days and we then measure the health benefits. Thus, you will be able to see what happens to real people when they make this change. In fact, all of our participants are on the site and their lab results too (it's all about transparency). They will be blogging throughout the entire study about their experience. You and your husband might want to check it out. Not to mention since you have been vegan so long you probably have a wealth of knowledge you could impart upon them. :) Perhaps, you could support one another. The URL is: www.theplantrx.com. Best wishes to you and your husband. You are going to love Alicia's site! Kind Regards, Jenna
Hi, I am a Vegan mom for 2 weeks now. My husband and children are not vegans. This is very difficult for me and the only thing that keeps me going is Alicia&Chris's influences. Also, to have a healthier and longer life.
I found Umeboshi plums from Japan in a square sealed package at "Asian Food Market". They had 3 varieties and each were $3.99 (about 10 plums). They all were pickled in a leafy herb. There were 2 in lighter colors than the pinkish red one. I can't remember names for 3 different Umeboshis. I went home to read Alicia's book and am going back to get the reddish one.
