I'm a transplant from Southern California. I now live in the Houston Area.
There's sooooooo much BBQ around here. :-P
Could I be the ONLY Kind Lifer in Texas??
~ MAC
Hi! I am in Houston too! I agree LOTS of BBQ here! Just wait, Rodeo season is here - you will see more and more ads for BBQ and such!

I'm in Houston too, oddly enough a Southern California transplant as well. It gets easier, trust me. I love Whole Foods and the organic sections of HEB & Kroger, and found a lot of awesome Japanese places and there is an all Vegan resturant in Houston called the Loving Hut.
Welcome! I've been a Houston-based vegetarian since 1987 (vegan since last year), so it can be done =).
Whole Foods is my go-to market, but Kroger has really gotten on the ball with its organic and Kind Life-appropriate products in recent years. Randall's is also good, just not with the same breadth of products. Central Market is a fancy HEB competitor to WF and several HEBs carry the CM organic line, so lots of choices there.
There are a handful of farmers market, too:

The Hong Kong Market out on Bellaire in far southwest Houston's Chinatown has a lot of exotic produce, and if you're into Indian food, there are several genuine restaurants and grocers off of Hillcroft and 59.
Hi Girls! I am in Houston too, vegan for a year and a half now and veg for about 18 years before that. I get my weekly produce from an awesome co-op run by a raw vegan named Kristina. Here is the link for the co-op: http://rawfullyorganic.com/
My favorite foods are all ethnic- Indian, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, etc... Fadi's is a great mediterranean restaurant with a vegan sampler plate that is wonderful! More and more places here in town are becoming veg-friendly you just have to ask nicely and they are usually happy to accomodate anyone.

I'm also in Houston, a native Houstonian actually. I agree, there is BBQ and Mexican food everywhere, but there are also a lot of vegan choices out there as well. Yes! Whole Foods is the best place to go. There are several around Houston and another one opening up on West Dallas and Waugh. I also have seen that Kroger's broadening their organic and natural isles. :)
A couple of months ago, I discovered that Backstreet Cafe has one of the best Vegan/Vegetarian Menus. All you have to do is ask for the separate menu. It's fantastic! I love the deeply roasted vegetable and whole grain dish! So yummy! But like many of you have said, almost any restaurant has at least a couple of vegan/vegetarian options and they will almost always work with you.
I'm looking forward to trying out the farmers markets around town. I didn't realize there was one in Rice. Thanks for the info! :)
My fave Whole Foods is the one off Kirby & 59 for thier extensive refrigerated Vegan section and when I lived in Richmond I LOVED the Whole Foods in Sugarland. My only complaint is that we don't have Trader Joes :(
Where's Backstreet Cafe at?
Thanks Allison! I'll def have to check Backstreet out. :)
I live in the League City area really close to Kemah but I am not opposed to driving. I just love being by the boardwalk (even though I am much more of a city girl haha) There's great sushi options around here, and a lot of the waitstaff are surprisingly knowledgeable about what goes into their food including the vegetarian sushi, which can easily be made vegan if its not vegan already.
I grew up by League City. My family still lives there. Kemah is great and I just love the water! My brother works there as a waiter, so I go there quite often. :)
Yes, take a look at the Backstreet menu. It's amazing!!!!
