Any kindlifers in Oak Park, IL?
Hi Megan. I'm in Oak Park too (near Fenwick). I saw your post in one of the other threads, and I understand how hard it is to eat out! I've been vegan since August/September 2010 and it's encouraged me to cook at home more, though I still eat out a lot.
There are many great vegan options at Indian and Thai restaurants in our area and I've found Maya del Sol and Marion St. Cheese Market (no joke) to be very accommodating also. My boyfriend is an omnivore, so this works out well for him too.
Please contact me if you want to discuss food!
Thanks for the tips. Very helpful. Do you recall if there were things on the menu at MSCM or if you had to speak up?
They change their menu seasonally and the last time I ate at MSCM I was still a vegetarian. I believe you would probably need to ask for suggestions. The staff is accommodating so I'm sure they'll be very helpful. Khyber Pass and Klay Oven are my favorite restaurants because all of the vegetarian entrees are made with vegetable oil and no meat broths - lots of options.
Outside of Oak Park I love Handlebar in Wicker Park on North Ave (http://handlebarchicago.com/). It's kind of a hipster bar/restaurant that serves vegetarian and vegan meals. They have some entrees with seafood, but almost everything can be made vegan. Every meal I've tried is excellent and reasonably priced. Karyn's on Green was very good the last time I was there (I wasn't impressed my first visit a year ago), but it's quite pricey. Cousins Incredible Vitality on Irving Park is... interesting. It's all raw.
Are you vegetarian/vegan, or are you working on getting there? I can suggest some cookbooks and websites with great (easy!) recipes if you like to cook at home.
I love Khyber pass- haven't visited since I've changed to a vegan diet. Its good to know they will be accommodating (sad to know I've had my last paneer). I changed to a vegan diet on January 1- and thankfully my boyfriend (who is a chef) is accommodating me and making some fantastic meals at home. But if you have websites and cookbooks we can try (or any "don't buy this, its gross) I'd appreciate it very much. My email is meganruth1@gmail.com if that is easier for you than this thread.
Thanks!!!
