Any kind lifers in this area?
Yes, my name is Emily Webber. I've been vegan (low-fat whole foods purely plant based diet) for almost 9 years. I'm married to an omnivore (he eats mostly vegan at home because that's what he gets! :)). We have a 3 1/2 year old son who is vegan as well (except for the occasional pizza with cow cheese that my husband feeds him - ugh!).
I'm a Food for Life Nutrition & Cooking Instructor for the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine www.pcrm.org and the Cancer Project www.cancerproject.org. Check out my website at www.emilywebber.com. I live in Sacramento. We have a very active vegan society here in Sacramento as well. Go to http://www.meetup.com/sacvegansociety-org/.
I live in Sacramento and have been vegan for a year and could never see myself going back. I don't know any other veggies though so I'd really love a meetup group and to connect with some other folks who are into this way of life! It can be lonely sometimes! :)
Hi Everyone! I'm also in Sacramento (North Sac)! My husband and I have been vegan for over three years now and love it! We've been in Sacramento for two years now... we moved up here from San Francisco. We're part of the Sacramento Vegan Meetup group, but we don't really go to too many Meetups.
We would love to get together with other vegans in the area for fun get-togethers, themed-potlucks, or even if just to alert each other to great restaurants in the area. This forum is a pretty brilliant idea!
Did any of you make it to the SacVegan Friday Night Salsa Meetup at the Red Lion? I really wish I could have made it...
Hi Katherine! That is so awesome how receptive your family was to the change! I stlil find friends and co-workers think of it as pretty alien. I want to try to change that eventually though through yummy foods...anyhow, I love Sunflower in Fair Oaks. I went once before I was veg and loved my nutburger. I had no idea The Counter had a vegan burger?! A lot of veggie burgers at non veg restaurants I've found have cheese or egg somewhere in there. I'm excited to hear that about Counter! Good to know about Fats and Pachamamas too! Thank you for sharing!
Have you heard of or tried Sugar Plum Cafe in downtown Sac on 2315 K Street? From what I know they used to be solely a wholesale baking company but opened up a cafe about a year ago. They make yummy vegan breakfast, lunch and dinner options and they have the sweetest treats too (i.e. cinnamon rolls ;)) My favorite sweet treats of what I've tried are the peanut butter creamie (two choc. chip cookies with a peanut butter creamy spread in the middle - to die for). I also love the Entertainer cupcake - looks like a hostess cupcake but soo much better. They have SO many baked treats I couldn't even begin to describe them all. For meal options the sweet potato avocado panini is a constant favorite. They change the menu every so often according to what's in season. I hear the "tuna" melt is fab too! You can look them up online and they have a menu posted.
I've found that Lucca in downtown Sac has a pasta that becomes vegan when you ask for it without breadcrumbs. We go here once every blue moon or so for work meetings and I've ordered the "spicy penne" sans bread crumbs. Yum! They also have appetizers like zucchini chips, grilled artichoke and most recently I saw cauliflower option but didn't get to try it. About a year ago when I went I even had some dairy free sorbet for dessert so I wasn't left out when everyone else ordered theirs.
Another place in Sacramento - downtown-ish area is Tower Cafe. They have a vegan burger I have yet to try but looked good. I usually get the vegetarian black bean soup, a side salad and an order of bread. I was so excited about this vegan bread but they recently changed it and the past two times I've gone they have not had the vegan option.
Also, Dos Coyotes and Chipotle always offer me yummy "fast food" options. I usually get a beans and rice burrito with lettuce but of course there are other options to add! I know Chipotle has an onion/bell pepper mix as well as corn that could be added to the burrito too.
I have never eaten at Loving Hut but I heard one just opened up close to me...kind of a fast food asian-style vegan place. I'll have to try! Have also heard that California Pizza Kitchen has a vegan pizza option but have not tried...for the most part I like to cook myself so I know what I'm making is absolutely veg, but it is fun to go out with friends/family and so nice to know places that offer veg options...oh how I wish the whole world was veg! :)
Hello, my name is Sara and I live in Roseville. I am interested in the Sac Vegan Society and Im going to check out the website now. I see that Emily Webber is here! I just had the pleasure of seeing/meeting Emily over the weekend at Farm Sanctuary and I cannot wait to attend some of her classes :)
