Hi everyone in B'ham and surrounding areas! I have lived here for almost 3 years now after moving from FL to attend law school. I love it here...especially all the outdoor activities and the change of seasons. Does anyone else think it is TOUGH being a veg in the South though?? I feel like it is always a challenge to find veg friendly restaurants and we seem to go to the same ones over and over where I know I can get something I can eat.
It is really tough to be veg in the South! I live in Auburn right now, and we have Publix & EarthFare for healthy groceries, but when I visit my parents' town there are no places to buy good foods! What are some of your favorite places to eat in Birmingham?
Hi Lindsey! In B'ham, two places I ALWAYS know I can go to and get a healthy veg friendly meal are Whole Foods (cafe, hot bar, salad bar, and they have a pizza bar that serves vegan pizza!) and Bottle Tree (small local vegetarian restaurant that also hosts some cool local bands). Both of these places have tons of options and I don't have to get all specific with special requests because there are already so many veggie options on the menu. California Pizza Kitchen is really good about accommodating as are most sushi and Thai places. I have found that a lot of mainstream/chain restaurants are getting better about accommodating vegetarians/vegans...you just have to ask them. I always visit the restaurant's website before we go so I can check out the nutrition/ingredient info and go with an action plan of what I am going to get. Hope that helps!
Hi Leanne! It is very hard to live in the south and not eat meat! It took my family almost a year to realize that I wouldn't die as a vegetarian. lol I don't live in Birmingham, but I live in Decatur. I have to drive to Huntsville to go to EarthFare to buy certain grocercies. My husband does drive down to Birmingham every few months for a gymnastics meet. Any suggestions on where to find miso? We can't find it anywhere. :)
HI! Just joined and glad to know there are some Southerners around!
It's VERY hard to be a veg in the South - I live just north of Birmingham so there's not much in the way of organic or vegetarian food. We have a Target which has more choices than most of the supermarkets and we're getting a Publix this Fall, YAY!
I wish there was a Whole Foods close by...I work in Birmingham but I don't relish the idea of driving in 280 traffic to get there.
If you're close to B'ham you could try the Golden Temple in Five Points - they have some pretty good food options, grains, spices, etc.
I know this thread is old but it is VERY difficult to go veg in the south esp vegan. I moved here in June of '11.
I drive 1 hr to Earth Fare in Montgomery and 2 hrs to Whole foods in B'ham. I am thinking about joining and organic csa. It is an hr away. I can not get organic produce in the area I am. It is soooo frustrating~
