Hi Jaci ! How are things out in Toowoomba? Did your place survive the flooding? Hope all your friends and family and safe & well. I have tried a couple of the recipes from The Kind Life, but most of the recipes I have been trying lately are from a book called Vegan Yum Yum (I ordered it online from a website called 'thebookdepository' - they ship from the UK so takes about 2-3 weeks for your books to arrive, but they are so much cheaper!! And they often have free shipping). Vegan Yum Yum also has an amazing website (veganyumyum.com) - so check it out if you're looking for more recipes and ideas! The website also has amazing colour photos of all the recipes, plus photos taken as the food is being prepared ... so if you're a novice vegan cook like me then it's super helpful! How long have you been vegan for?? Are you on facebook? Jade x

Hi Jade!

Our backyard got flooded, but we were fine, some friends houses have been destroyed though & we had people staying with us that couldn't get home! Did yours go under in brissy?

I originally went vegan in 2009 after reading Skinny Bitch, but it was quite a shock, and didn't hack it long as my partner was really anti-vego. But now I've been vegetarian for around 6 months, have been avoiding milk and butter - using vegan alternatives. Going to go totally vegan this year! Im studying nutrition at the moment, so it is great to see the overlap!I don't worry too much about recipes, I just adapt what I would normally cook kind of! I love making risottos with brown rice, mushroom and leek etc. Also I make heaps of soups, which my sisters love!

Do you live with your fam? Makes it harder to avoid cheese etc when its everywhere!

Glad to hear your place was ok! Ours was fine, I'm about 30 minutes north of the CBD and whilst we live right on the North Pine dam, we are right up on top of a hill where it's impossible to flood. We did get cut off for 3 days though as all the rivers around the bottom of our road (that lead out from the dam) flooded to over a metre high - so lots of time to sit and stare at the ceiling.

So you've been vegie for 6 months - that is awesome! Only 3 months for me. And I'm the same, avoiding milk and butter and cheese etc but still not quite 100% there ... another few months and I hope to be though!

I was also studying nutrition and naturopathy (Bachelor of Health Science) on campus at the Australian College of Natural Medicine (now Endeavour) but deferred about 18 months ago as I had to go back to work full time. I'm hoping to get back into it, part time, some time in the next 12 months though. Where abouts are you studying?

I haven't read Skinny Bitch yet but have just ordered it online so should get it in a couple of weeks - so looking forward to it!

I live with my boyfriend and whilst he is a fully fledged carnivore, he is pretty understanding and supportive about me going vegan. I do most of the cooking so he now only eats meat once or twice a week, at most, which is great - and he is really enjoying all the vegan meals I'm cooking. He also orders vegetarian now when we get takeaway so that we can still share (bit cute!). And the other night he surprised me when he was in charge of cooking dinner by going on the net and finding a vegan recipe & then going to the supermarket and buying all the stuff and cooking me a fully vegan meal :) But in saying all that, there's no way he'll ever be a full time vego or vegan.

Have you read the blog Kiss Me, I"m Vegan? I just found it the other day & it's great. I'm going to start a blog in the next couple of months hopefully.

Hi Jade and Jaci,

I'm on the gold coast (Mt Tamborine). I've been vego for 5 years and vegan for 12 months. I don't make it to Brisbane all that often but I can recommend some great places to eat if you'r ever down this way.

Cheers,

Naomi

Hello Jade, Jaci and Naomi!

Naomi, i'm also living on the Gold Coast (Tallai-Gilston area)! Ooh you must be a tad cold at the moment up at Springbrook, but i bet you love living there- it's such a leafy paradise! It's great to know that there's somebody else i can chat to on here who lives in my home city! I'm just new at this (about one month) so i'd love to know where you buy your alternatives for dairy products and any cool places you've been on the GC. I went to this beautiful little vegan/vegetarian place in Burleigh today called 'From Earth and Water' (i think it was called that) and i fell in love, so i'm desperately searching for other nice little cafes and restaurants.

Jaci- My grandmother lives in Toowoomba and i'm actually attending USQ this year, so i'd love to know of any cool places to snack, or have dinner! I'm sure you're an expert :)

Jade- My boyfriend is exactly the same :) Completely supportive, and even a little veg-curious (i caught him saying, sincerely, 'oh nah, i don't think i'll have any, i'm trying to be healthy like Ali' to his sister one night when she offered him some meatlovers pizza), but a total carnivore for life.

I think it's beautiful what you're all doing and it's lovely to know that now i have someone to talk to about it.

Thanks :)

Hi Jade,

I live in Brisbane and would love to hang out/meet up with some other Kind Lifers. I'm not just interested in veganism & healthy eating, but also animals, the environment, recycling and anything green really and am super keen to meet some like-mind people and make some new friends :)

I was vegan for about 7 months until about 4 months ago when I found out I was pregnant ... unfortunately my cravings for dairy were too strong to ignore but I still do not eat meat (and will never go back).

Do you ever go to the Northey Street markets? Perhaps we could catch up one day for a cup of chai?

Cheers,

Kate

Hiya Guys, I'm living on the Gold Coast at the moment while I'm at Uni (Bond) but am from Adelaide originally. I've been vegetarian for about 5 years now, but have been vegan for about 2 weeks! so really new at this. I'm struggling a bit seeing as I've only lived up here for a year - so any help with where to buy vegan groceries would be great. At the moment i'm going to Flannery's but they don't have everything...

The only vego / vegan places I know to go to on the GC are tian ran, the from earth and water place in Burleigh, and Three worlds (although i think it just shut down)

I don't know anyone else vegan, and only a few vegetarians, so it would be really cool to meet up sometime. Jaci, Jade and Kate - i'm sometimes up in Brisbane - I imagine there's a bit more vegan friendly stuff up there than down here?? I'd be pretty happy to trek it up there to meet up at some point.

Cheers,

Maddie
