Anyone in Columbia? I need to meet people I can eat with! :)

I'm in Columbia! I've been waiting to see if there are any kind lifers around here. I know there's a vegan group here in Cola also, but I haven't met any of them. Nice to know we're not alone! :)

Cool! I didn't know there was a vegan group. That's great. How do you get in touch w/them?

I snooped and saw you're a yogi...do you practice anywhere here? I love it too! Just signed up to do my teacher training @Amsa in the spring!

I just did a search for vegan groups a couple days after switching. Here's the website: http://www.meetup.com/ColumbiaVeg/calendar/14878213/. It was funny because two days after I switched and found that group, my boyfriend and I were out to eat and saw them leaving the restaurant! Small world, huh?

I practice at a small studio in Irmo, I'm not sure it even has a name. My instructor use to teach at Gold's Gym in Irmo and she is FANTASTIC! I also take a few classes from instructors at Gold's in Irmo and Forest Acres.

That's so exciting you're taking teacher classes! Are you looking to become an instructor anywhere or just broadening your understanding?

Wow, that's crazy. Where were you eating? I'm totally joining, thanks!

Ooh ok, I go to Gold's in Forest Acres too, Brenda's the best! I bet we've totally been in class together! If you see a girl with a ton of brown curly hair, it's probably me. I'll be on the lookout for you too. :)

I'd like to start teaching anywhere and everywhere that will let me and eventually open up my own studio/cafe. I'm going back to school to get my R.D. after I finish this [useless] masters I'm trying to complete right now.

I was at the Al Amir downtown. I've been thinking about joining since I don't know any vegetarians, let alone vegans!

I LOVE Brenda's classes!! I also love doing the other classes at the gym, so unfortunately I only get to take her class on Saturday. I would say I'll be there this Saturday, but my other teacher is doing a special 3 hour class. Can't wait for that!

I'd say check with Gold's, I think as long as you have a basic certification they'll let you teach some classes. Or maybe you could be a sub for when the other teachers can't make it. I don't know if that's the ideal place for you, but since you're a member you're already familiar with how classes work?

I have also been thinking about taking some nutrition/dietition classes! I got my bachelor's from USC in business and it hasn't done much for me yet. Plus, I don't think I have the heart or cutthroat attitude to succeed in that industry. Where are you thinking of going?

Me too, I am a spin lover...enthusiast would be an understatement! Sometimes I do body pump too. Let me know next time you'll be there and I'll look out for you.

Yeah, I do think Gold's will be my first place to ask...it's not what I'd ultimately want to do but any experience is good experience! Maybe I'll check local Y's or the other gyms around here too...

It's hard to find good information out there if you're looking to go into the field of nutrition. There are a lot scams out there. If you want to be a dietician (not the same as nutritionist) Winthrop has an appropriately accredited program, and so does Clemson, but I don't want to move or commute so I'm a little torn. I found one online program in the ENTIRE country so I am crossing my fingers that that works out. We'll see...I don't know if you've looked around but a good place to start is the ADA's website: eatright.org

I think the next class I'll be doing at Forest Acres will be spinning on Sunday at 10:00a. Do you usually go in the mornings or evenings? I'd love to meet up and say hey in person!

I feel the same way about commuting, my boyfriend still has a couple years left a USC so I'd either have to go there or online for classes. I'm always hesitant of online degrees because even though they may be legit, I wouldn't want a potential employer to think it was crap just because it was online. I'm also not sure if I'm more interested in nutrition or dietitian or some combination of the two. I've definitely got to do a lot more research! Thanks for the website tip!

Hey I saw this in a thread and didn't know if you had heard of this before. Here's the website:

http://www.ecornell.com/certificate-programs/co-branded-programs-training/certificate-in-plant-based-nutrition-certificate/crt/TCCC01

It looks to be interesting and informative.. but I don't know if it would just be like reading The China Study. The people in the thread highly recommended it. Figured I'd get your two cents about it! :)

I'm interested in going back to school to study nutrition or to be a dietician as well. I'm in Conway, SC and I know there is nothing around here. I read up on the Certificate in plant based nutrition and I've searched to see what online programs there are throughout the country and there just isn't much out there. This is the only thing I've every found that I'm this passionate about though...I'm just in limbo now trying to decide what I want to do.
