Hi all,
This is my fourth week being vegan and have been doing pretty good with it. But now I have the flu and am feelin terrible. I've been craving some good ole comfort food but none of it fits in with my vegan diet...any suggestions??
Also, should I avoid the meds the doc has prescribed?? Took some this morning bc cough and sneezing was pretty bad but am just feeling so weak now....
Too tired and drowsy to get in the kitchen and prepare some healthy options.... ugh....
Hi J. Maxted,
Sorry you are sick. But, yes, I would highly recommend getting those healing plums that Alicia just blogged about a couple days ago. The Umeboshi Plums are amazing! I just bought some yesterday from Whole Foods (in the asian food section) and although they were expensive I was shocked at how quickly I felt healed. They are quite sour and salty to my taste, but like Alicia says, they are worth it because they are SO good for you! Suck on the pit for extra strength. I would also suggest a product from Biorin for flu. That always helps me.
PS What comforts are you craving?
Good luck and feel better!
Hi Linsay, thanks for your message. Yep i went out on a quest today to find some umeboshi plums... they have them everywhere here in HK and just when i actually want to buy it i cant find it anywhere!!! just my luck :(
have just sent my husband to the japanese groceries to get some... ugh... hope they do the trick. I used to eat them when i would get a bad cough but that was years ago, dunno why i ever stopped.
Still feeling like S*** ... im craving things like spicy noodles, chilli, pizza (wierd i know) ice cream...
Dont want to indulge like that anymore so have cooked up some nice roast veggies with wholewheat cous cous... filling me up and feeling satisfied but head is still clogged up and cant taste much of anything...
Not the best option, but if you're feeling too ill to cook, you could pick up some healthy packaged vegan soups (McDougall makes some good ones), and heat them up and add some cayenne (or if your husband would do it - make the Healing Soup in TKD and then add cayenne to that). I know you have the flu, but cayenne is good for fighting colds and might help. I would also start eating raw garlic. You can have it on toast, or simply swallow whole cloves - obviously cut them in half or something if they're really big so you don't choke! Garlic is really good for fighting colds and flus. (And I would make sure the plums you get don't have MSG, as many, though not all, of the ones sold in Asian markets have MSG). Feel better!
Spicy noodles might not be a bad idea! Can be vegan and the spice can help clear up your head and chest. Can your husband make a batch of vegan chili, nice and spicy? Or go to whole foods and find a good canned one, or hopefully they will have some made and ready. They always have a big selection of veggies soups and chili's hot and ready to eat. Or pick up some daiya and put on a tortilla/vegan premade pizza dough and top with some veggies from the salad bar and some can/jar pizza sauce. I would try to find a way to eat what your craving, you need to keep your strength up! Hope you feel better soon. Of course, make some healing tea as well!!
Also, the coconut ice creams are awesome! my fave is mocha almond. the rice dream patties from the book are good too!
wow thanks for all the suggestions guys!
Wil have to try the vegan chilli..... sounds very good...
not sure if Hong Kong sells soy ice cream but will have to get my husband do go out and look for some heheheh....
Feeling better already...thanks for the support xx
Vegetable bullion has been a god send for me throughout my sickness. Plenty of oranges and cranberry juice as well. Everyone is preaching about seeing a doctor and getting antibiotics! Yekkk!
