Lexie- I completely understand how you feel, and I am so sorry that you have to deal with this. I don't get my period without the help of Provera, so we're in the same boat. Trying to conceive unsuccessfully has been such an emotionally draining process. I really give so much credit to women who try for years and years without success.

Of course you can use the Atkins diet Lauren! I had PCOS and I have type 2 diabetes and the vegan version of the Atkins diet is what I use. Be sure to get the 2010 version of the book called THE NEW ATKINS FOR A NEW YOU by Dr. Eric C. Westman, Dr. Stephen D. Phinney, and Dr. Jeff S. Volek. I lost a LOT of weight on it (over 200 pounds) and got my diabetes under control. I also use birth control pills for the PCOS. PCOS does not lead to diabetes but is part of a syndrome that includes diabetes. Low carb means low carb, not what kind of carbs you are eating. I use loads of veggies, seitan (made myself), low glycemic berries and fruit, tofu, plain soymilk and almond milk, and low carb veggie burgers. My diabetes is under control and so is the PCOS. Beware of PCOS- it can lead to ovarian cancer which is hard to diagnose until it is too late. I have seen too many people die of it. Sometimes chemicals such as the pill are necessary because frankly, cancer is ugly and painful and will kill you. I don't want to see anyone else die of cancer.

Just an update- I went to the RE yesterday, and my PCOS is GONE!!!! I was so excited that I nearly started to cry. I've been really watching my diet (eating plant-based and foods recommended for fertility) and taking lots of supplements. I'm not sure if that's what helped or what, but I'll take it! :)

Hi! I was recently diagnosed with PCOS as well. Not only do I have cysts in my ovaries and irregular/no periods, but my hormones are all out of wack, my hair has thinned dramatically, developed milk acne and gained about 20lbs. This all has happened just in the last 8 months, since I went off birth control. My reason for going off bc was to eliminate extra toxins/chemicals in my body, but it looks like it was really keeping my symptoms at bay. Any recommendations on natural ways of curbing PCOS symptoms and balancing out hormones? Any recs on the type of hormonal supplementation/birth control that has worked in the past? I have been a vegan for almost 2 years and am super active (just this year I completed a marathon, multiple triathlons and a half ironman), and take a bunch of supplements.
