Help!!! This is my first time on a Vegan Diet and I am on day 5. I am very active at the gym. I just have 10 more pounds to loose and thought I would try this. As of today, I have gained 3 pounds and am SUPER bloated! Is this normal??

Hi :)

as you say you feel bloated you shouldn't focus on the weight gain for now. did you start eating a lot of legumes and tofu? both can lead to bloating, esp. if you are not used to it. if so, cut it out completely for 2-3 days and start incorporating it in small portions again.

other than that I have, unfortunately, no idea what else could be the problem.

but I hope that you'll feel better soon and that you stay vegan, after getting used to more wholegrains and legumes you will feel so much lighter than with meat! Good luck!

Yes, this can be depending on what you r diet was prior to switching to a vegan one and what you started eating once you did. I would have to know more to determine the cause. A probiotic is often helpful. If you look at the participants in our study...those that experienced this found them to help quite a bit (they explain it on the individual pages where they have been journaling since they switched to a plant-based = vegan diet 30 days ago)

Hope that helps. Jenna

Chaise,

I experienced a little bit of weight gain in the first week I completely went vegan. In my case, I was ignoring my body when it was hungry and my body was holding onto every calorie I was eating. Make sure you are eating enough. I know...it sounds exactly opposite of what we all have learned about losing weight. But if you have cut out meat, cheese, eggs, milk, processed foods, etc. and you are really active, you may need to up your calorie intact with healthy grains, beans, legumes, etc. Your body will adjust to beans and tofu. Just give it time! Best of luck!

Don't focus on the weight, at first it fluctuates but this is normal, as is the bloating. Remember that aminal flesh / products are VOID OF FIBER. And now that you are eating Plant Based Diet, Fiber is all your taking in! also the Flora in your gut is changing ( for the better) give your body a couple of weeks to get into the rhythm of your new diet ;-)

Chaise,

I am having a similiar problem but I am 30 days out, other vegans have told me my bloat- constant bloat that i have might be due to soy and sugar. My stomach kills me I look 5 months prego when i am bloated and it hurts after awhile. I have been eating beans for while so thats not it but I feel your pain.. everyone keeps saying it will pass so hopefully they are right. I gained weight to but i think it is the bloating causing the extra weight...keep me posted on how you are doing.... i am going to try to stay away from soy as much as I can and no more white sugar.....

Not sure about the bloating, but I found that tracking what I was eating on an online calorie counter helped, and when I started doing that--and working out--I started losing weight.
