I have been reading Alicia's blog for a while now and I read her book yesterday. Read it all in one day. LOL
I have lost 71 pounds (Have about 35 more pounds to go) since March 2010 by Eating Clean (I am about 95% clean eater). However, I am ready to eliminate animal products.
Suggestions on some of the standard animal food products I was relying on.
Chicken/Ground Turke y?
Eggs ?
Yogurt ?
Cheese ?
I don't drink milk. I do drink Silk Unsweetened Almond Milk or Unsweetened Soy. I haven't had beef in a long long time. Pork I an easily eliminate.
Veggies, Fruit, healthy fats, Grains I understand.
Oh and is there a list of ingredients to watch out for? Like I know casein is animal. What other terms should I look for?
Hey Anne - congratulations on the weight loss and the journey of veganism that you are starting! It is so great that you read Alicia's book. To get rid of those last 35lbs and to feel absolutely amazing - start using some of the superhero recipes from her book.
As far as "substituting" eggs, yogurt and cheese - there are vegan yogurts and vegan cheese too. There are recipies on the web for "eggs" - like ground flax and water etc. But - these foods are "treats" and not a regular part of the superhero "diet".
All the best!
I stopped at Whole Foods and asked for help from an employee who is Vegan. I got:
Seiten
Tempeh
Tempeh Bacon
Tofutti
Soy Yogurt
Earth Balance
Daiya Cheese
Gardein BBQ thingy
Gardein Chicken thingy
I picked up Tofu today (firm and silken)
I have grains, veggies, fruit on hand already
I did buy an Amy's Bowl yesterday. Oh my, it was really really good (but high in sodium). I had it last night. It was the blackeyed pea, veggies and brown rice. I just wanted to give it a try. I might keep a few on hand for emergencys.
Can you think of anything else I should pick up on Friday?
Im curious Anne if all that cost a lot of money? Its so funny how your story is pretty identical to mine! I grabbed the book yesterday and finished it today! lol I think my sadness I feel is losing dairy products. I dont drink milk but I LOVE cheese! I was planning on going to Whole Foods tomorrow to go "exploring"! haha!
When you go to Whole Foods ask at the Customer Service Desk if they have an employee who is Vegan that can show you around. That is what I did.
Daiya cheese is pretty good. The soy yogurt is good too. I love Earth Balance! I bought Vegainese and love it!
Gardein chicken thing, I didn't like.
I think this is going to be trial and error.
As far as cost? The Daiya cheese is expensive here. Over $4 a package. That is something I will get every once in a while. I can't afford that.
I enjoyed reading these posts. I too have been reading the book and wanting to try alternatives. We do not have a Whole Foods in the Buffalo area, but some wonderful smaller shops. I hope you continue to talk about your progress..I am not sure where to gain support as I venture into serious flirting.
Have an awesome day.
Rick
