Vegan at Easter-what's everyone's thought on Easter eggs?

So, I was invited to go color Easter eggs with my family. I already had plans the day I was invited to do it (well for at least some of day), so I conveniently turned it down. However, then it got me thinking about the whole tradition of easter eggs and how they're a product of the dairy industry. I know I run the risk of sounding a bit radical or extreme here, but I don't think I can support this tradition now. I mean, putting hens thru all the suffering just so we can color eggs or going on an Easter egg hunt? It seems kind of pretentious to me. Anyway, I was wondering:what are your thoughts about Easter eggs?
I agree, even though it was a tradition in my family as a child, I won't be participating anymore. You are not extreme at all.
My mom didn't like wasting food, and nobody in our family liked boiled eggs, so we never colored real Easter eggs growing up. My mom would buy wood ones at the craft store and we'd each get one to paint every year. My mom would save them year to year, and now there's an entire collection of adorable eggs that my brother and parents and I painted each year. Not only are you not contributing to the industry, but you get an heirloom to keep for a long time out of it.
Dani, that is a great idea! Someday I will do that with my nieces when they are old enough instead! Thanks for a great alternative!
Hey thanks everyone who posted on this for making me feel more like I'm right & normal for my beliefs. I was starting to feel like no one understood why I feel this way about using Easter eggs and even my friends who are leaning toward vegan seem to think I'm being a bit extreme for this, but I am standing by my decision. Dani A, the wooden eggs are a great idea! If I ever have kids, that's what we'll do. It's annoying sometimes when other people around seem so oblivious to what's really going on or turn a blind eye to it. Nothing ever gets changed that way. Thanks for your support!
