Well I guess I am the first official online Kind Lifer in Hawai'i! welcoming any more...
I am a native Texan, but I moved to Hawai'i six months ago, and will continue to live here for the next two and a half years.
wow! we share the same story. I too am a native texan who moved to hawaii six months ago and i to plan to live here for the next 2 1/2 yrs! military im assuming?
Yes, my husband is in the Army. You?
yes, army stationed in schofield.
well hubby is.. i dont know about you but i miss texas already!
My husband works at Fort Shafter (sometimes he has to go to Schofield), but we live on Tripler.
Yes, I miss Texas very much. I grew up around my mother's family (almost in a commune-like setting really), and I am very close to my siblings and extended family. It has been a difficult adjustment. My mother is coming to visit in nineteen days, and I am very excited. My husband was a Navy brat, and had been in the Army for a few years when we met, so he is pretty used to all of this. However, even though he trash talked it often while he lived there, my husband has been shocked to discover that HE misses Texas! He fell in love with it without even realizing it. So, he recently announced that he would like to move back there when his enlistment is up.
Well im kind of used to the whole relocating but this time is different, i cant just hop in the car and drive to my family! We too plan to return to texas after hawaii, although my hubby is a lifer and has 7 yrs left. I was born and raised in El Paso and then lived in Colorado Springs for 3yrs then another 3 in Dallas Ft Worth area and now here. We live in Ewa Beach, its nice but a commute for my hubby to schofield every morning. I recently became a vegan because i gave up all meats for lent then i read this book and two weeks later realized how much better i felt and had absolutely no cravings for meat! Its been kind of hard for other people to see why i have choosen the lifestyle but l try to stay positive and focused. Hard sometimes when you dont have a support group or have people who share the same views on veganism. My Favorite part is shedding the lbs without the extra dieting effort!
I bet you're excited to see your mom! Its always nice to have family visit :)
HI I am also in hawaii and feel really alone in the veggie world! this has to be the worst state ever for us to live in and it surprises me. we are here with the navy. I just recently got my family on board with my kind diet and its been very easy for my husband and 5 year old about I think it is having a negitive effect on my almost 10 year old, she hates it and her attitude is horrible since week 2 she is now on week 18 I beleive any addvice you could give me or names of reading material that would be awesome. I think if she was able to be around other vegs she would find it exceptable, but she knows no one so she feels like an outcast.
Aloha ladies! Try to get to one of the Down to Earth stores-there are several on Oahu.In Honolulu, literally not that many blocks from the Down to Earth,is a partially vegan (they carry meat and eggs...) co-op called Kokua.Within walking distance of both (come on and walk, save gas!) is a delightful vegan cafe-restaruant called Peace Cafe.
There is also the Vegetarian Society of Hawai'i,which often has events.
