Hi All, I finished "The Kind Diet" last nite, enjoyed the book so much....but many many questions.

Big one is, what is the deal with the "nightshade" plants? Tom's, potatoes, etc. I always read that tomatoes are so super healthy, and the season for fabulous vine ripened tom's is almost here. Can anyone explain why niteshades should be avoided? thanks kva

Kaava - if you take a look at the section Alicia has on this, first - it's a principle of the 'superhero' diet (based on macrobiotics) to limit nightshades, so if your goal isn't superhero, you don't need to worry about it. However, the reasoning behind it is that nightshades are believed to be a contributor to joint inflammation, and so should be consumed only occasionally, and defintely not daily. Alicia has mentioned that she enjoys them as treats on occasion, and specifically that when in season, she will eat tomatoes from her own garden or the farmer's market. For more information, you can always do a search on nightshades. The bottom line is eat them only occasionally, so as not to create joint inflammation.
