Eating Vegan on a Cruise

Just returned from my week long honeymoon cruise! I had a blast but I was soooo disappointed by the vegan food options, in fact besides salad nothing was vegan! I felt worse physically as the week went on because avoiding dairy was almost impossible but I still had a great time...Me & the new hubby both agreed that we may not go on another cruise for awhile!
Has anyone else encountered this &/or found a solution to the problem? I was on Carnival cruise lines.
Thanks :)
Oh gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about your experience Sarah. My father is talking about going on a cruise and since my husband and I are both vegan it is something we are concerned about.
(Congratulations, by the way!)
For your next cruise you may want to try a holistc cruise! (http://www.atasteofhealth.org/) I've definitely been looking at this as a real splurge for our next vacation. I mean, yoga, massages, and talks from my favorite veggie doctors? How cool would that be!
Since I've not been on a cruise before I can't recommend any for vegans. (I've heard of lots that claim to be "vegetarian" friendly, but I can't recommend any without personal experience.)
I do remember a blog a while back giving away passes for a vegan cruise, I just can't remember which line it was! I'll try my best to find it and let you know.
Thank you for letting us know about Carnival!
I have read on this site in other threads that people spoke with someone from the cruise beforehand about needing vegan options and they were quite receptive. I think you can't just go on the cruise and assume they will have food for you. I think when you get on there or before you need to contact someone that will be able to get that taken care of. These days they have to be able to have options for people with food allergies and things like that too or they are going to lose business.
You're absolutely right, catconsrv. It may be horrible but when restaurants assume it is a dietary intolerance they are much more accomodating! I find if I call in advance and say, "I can't have dairy, can this be made without cheese" or whatever else they are super accomodating and not in the least defensive.
Thanks to you both! We actually did call ahead and say that we were Vegan & they said that they had plenty to accomadate us but I am not sure that our contact actually knew the definition of Vegan & perhaps assumed vegetarian would work. I think if I said I had a health related issue that prevented me from eating any animal product would probably have been more affective but I let them know on the survey that having more options for other diets would keep us coming back. Cruises are such great ways to travel, I'd hate to not go on one again. Thanks for the input :)
