maple sugar vs. maple syrup

I'm hoping someone can help me with the difference between maple sugar and maple syrup. I bake some sort of muffin or goody every day and would like to replace maple syrup instead of the sugar because it is a lot cheaper. Would that work? For example, I LOVE Alicia's pb cups- could I use maple syrup instead? Is it a 1:1 ratio?

I've wanted to ask a similar question about this subject as here in the UK, I cannot find maple sugar anywhere and wondered what the best alternatives were.
