Supplement with folic acid?

I am seeing many mixed messages out there about whether it is a good idea to supplement pre-natal with folic acid for a healthy baby. The mainstream says to do it because it reduces neural tube defects. But other studies, including those references by Doctor Joel Fuhrman:

say not to take it because it causes cancers and other issues for both mom and baby. I am not sure what to do.
What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Come on, no one has any thoughts? Can people at least weigh in if they are choosing to supplement with folic acid or not? Any discussion would be helpful.
