Hi Kim, so I had the opposite problem that you are having: my periods were getting closer and closer together accompanied by terrible PMS tension, fatigue and sugar cravings for one or more out of every three weeks. When I cut out 95% of all the animal products I'd been eating (haven't completely given up eggs), the PMS was cut down to two not-too-bad days and my periods started getting farther apart and eventually went back to a 28 days cycle. That being said, I think it might be a smart idea to see a gynecologist just to make sure everything is okay. The two things that come to mind is that you may have developed insulin resistance or that you have PCOS. Maybe Google both of those and see if either rings true. Even if you have of of those things or something else, I suspect a good, healthy vegan diet with few or no processed foods could really help. Good luck! Post updates!!
I second what Isabelle said about seeing a gynecologist, just to be sure. :)
Personally, one of the best "side effects" of going vegan has been the effect it has had on my period. I used to have terrible PMS, cramps, and I was actually thinking I was perimenopausal because my periods were so screwed up. Now they are SO predictable, short, and I have so little cramping I don't even take any meds at all (I used to take at least 12-16 ibuprofen during the course of 3-4 days)! Oh and no PMS!
I can only imagine that not ingesting all the hormones (and other nastiness) that are now in meats and dairy products finally allowed my OWN hormones to regulate and do what they are supposed to do.
I think being vegan is only going to help you in this area, as well as many others you never imagined! Enjoy the journey.
thank you so much guys, ive heard that being overweight/ underweight can cause you to not menstrate... it just seems weird cuz im only 21. ill see if this helps then ill buck up and go to a gyno :)
I've never had a single period, while being veggie.
After one month being Vegan, my periods completely sorted themselves out. After 4 mos even my breast cysts have shrunk down to practically nothing. It is absolutely incredible how quickly and how much things have changed.
