I just read a report about hijiki that it contains arsenic in small amounts and too much consumption can result in poisoning. Later in the same article, it indicated that sea veggies are carcinogenic and that eating too many (e.g. macrobiotic diets) of them can lead to illness. Is there any foundation for these claims, and if so, should we really be consuming so much? I'm just trying to stay informed.

Could you post the link or reference?

Wikipedia...that's why I don't really trust it. Here it is:

Hijiki is no longer available in Australia and many other countries due to this fact and the high iodine levels it contains. Definitely stick with Arame instead...much safer.

Also, I recently read that in Nori there can be up to 10% fish in it. Quite disturbing for those vegans who consume this. (Thankfully, I don't.)

I think if you have a balanced macro diet, one doesn't consume too many sea veggies...but some vegans do eat way too much...everything in moderation, I'd say.

Thanks Emily :)

Yes, thanks for posting this. I agree with Ruthy -- I would avoid hijiki for now; arame is very similar . I wouldn't eat sea veggies more than a couple of times a week.
