I totally believe in the Vegan lifestyle. I love Alicia's book and it defiantly helped support my decision. I am finding it hard to not dive into a pepperoni pizza or chicken sandwich every now and then, but I am doing well with the veggie burgers and the soy dogs because they taste like school meals I used to like, but breaking from dairy is hard. I'm having trouble knowing what foods include dairy or eggs in store bought items. In my town, a college town, there isn't any restaurants that are vegan. All veggie dishes are made with butter, etc. So I have been having to eat more vegetarian than vegan when we go out. Does anyone else have this problem or do you just not eat at restaurants anymore?
I know I also am confused regarding shopping. I can't for the life of me figure out what kind of bread to buy. I bought a loaf of that Ezekiel Bread but my god it tastes like cardboard. Is there any bread and buns (that doesn't taste like cardboard) that are vegan that can be found in a normal Kroger? I know I can't find a lot of ingredients for dishes in any store in my town, mostly Asian flavors and junk, so I'm kinda frustrated. Any tips or info anyone could give would help a lot.
Hallo! Welcome :)
this coming from my own experience is this:
You might want to start with making dishes that you've made before vegan. Substituut meat with tofu, beans, brown rice, lentils etc. These are not too expensive and mostly easy to find...
Eating rice with vegetables is a great way to. Spaghetti with vegs, chili sin carne...
If you drink soymilk or any othe kind of milk it gets you also plenty of everything. Eat some nuts, lots of fruits/vegs, make nice smoothies. You'll be fine. And slowly slowly it will grow on you.
I started like that and slowly slowly incorporate some of the more excotic suggestions... Just look at how your body reacts. What do you like and what you like less... What feels good, what suits less
If you can get your hands on soymilk, there is also a lot of things you can make yourself, like veganaise:
you can find the recipe here:

When I wrote this I was eating vegan now for 6 months ( a few dairy-slips while eating out though...and while travelling in asia i ate mostly evegetarian but iam going on vegan again now) I did not eat meat for 20+ years but ate some fish every now and then. I dont know how this vegan stuf ;) came in my life, but all of a sudden it was everywhere... Cutting out dairy was more easy than expected as I used to eat a lot of cheese! it going fine. Mostly also because i discover i really like cooking, which i never did. I used to buy most things ready because i thought it was difficult to make them.
