WATER FILTER VS BOILING

i'm reluctant to use the plastic water filter jugs with cartridges but i'm not sure what the best eco alternative is. all water filters seem to require plastic cartridges and i'm not even sure what's in them exactly! i rent a flat, so any expensive filtering system is out of the question. is boiling and cooling the water just as effective? any ideas? thanks!
