I'm looking for answers on this. I emailed Gary Yourofsky about how we should feed animals that are natural meat eaters that live in zoos, aquariums, sanctuaries, etc. He feels that they should be feed mock meat and vegan food. Is this really healthy for animals like whales, lions, bears etc? I've been told twice that this is a back burner issue. Once by Gary and once on another forum. I have yet to see very solild resposes aside from Gary. He claims that vegan food would be just fine for these animals. Thoughts?

Your are going to find very staunch supporters of each side of this issue. If you search for threads on feeding cats vegan diets you will see this. I think carnivores evolved to eat meat and therefore need it, and I believe that humans are biologically meant to be herbivores or opportunistic omnivores at most. That is just my opinion, but like I said, you will hear from both sides of this issue.

I have a simialr opinion. I am not sure if its "natural" or healthy for them to eat in a way they were not designed for. Many people get upset about these aniamls living in an unatural habitat to being with and now we want to feed them a food they weren't meant to eat?
