I think the reason why Alicia recommends not using spices often is to give tastebuds a chance to really taste the flavours of foods without alterations.
Many times, we use spices and herbs that mask the flavour of foods and we feel the need to drown things in sauces.
I don't think she says that spices are bad for us at all. But used often, over time, our tastebuds get dull to certain tastes and its hard to appreciate natural, whole foods.
That said, I feel like she puts shoyu in all her recipes! Bleh, I can do without!
I had some lovely harissa in a rice and peas dish today. It burnt my mouth! lol. Think I'll have some fennell tomorrow and let the veg flavours speak for themselves!
I think maybe she mentioned it was acidic to the blood like nightshade veggies?
from a macrobiotic/superhero standpoint, spices are harsh and extreme on our system. Many are tropical and not in keeping with seasonal eating.
Ah, yes that would make sense
Im a big fan of spices, even if you dont tolerate or care for the hot spices there are still a wealth of different options.
Many spices have alot of studies behind them on there health benefits such as turmeric and its anti-cancer properties, liver protectant, anti-inflammatory benefits etc.
All spices have a range of different health properties and most are considered anti-cancer again with research to back that up.

I love spices too! I think they actually make my belly feel better. And they make food satisfying at times when I'm craving things I shouldnt have. Yesterday made some spicy hot sauteed cabbage and tofu with garlic and sesame. And coconut rice with turmeric? Yum! Other times I'm ok with bland. Guess it depends on how I'm feeling.
Mmm sounds yum:). I dont really go overboard on the spices anymore like i used to lol but i still use a decent amount of them to both compliment the recipes i make and for there medicinal health benefits.
