Hi All. This is my first time posting anything on forum like this so I would be greatful for any advice, tips, suggestion people may have... I developed an interest in nutrition about 9 months ago and began reading various health books, Alicias being the most recent and I really am very interested in becoming vegan. I have been trying on and off for a couple of months but dairy seems to be my biggest challenge - I just love cheese and milk chocolate!!! :( Also I recently moved to another counrty with my boyfriend away from our family and I tend to comfort eat when Im homesick. So that coupled with the fact that alot of the food here is very different from home means I have been slipping up and cant seem to stay focused. I would be greatful for any insight from anyone who has struggled with a similiar issue as it can get very disheartening...
I have only been vegan for about 6 months and I found it very difficult to give up cheese. I am finding that I don't miss it anymore, but I think you should try giving up the cheese or the milk chocolate and then give up the other after a period of time. There are some great recipes for fake cheese and some great vegan cheese that you can buy at the store (I like Daiya, but haven't really tried any others). If you like chocolate try switching to dark chocolate, many are vegan. The dark chocolate usually gives me my chocolate fix and I don't feel deprived. I found that the first 3-4 months were the hardest and now I don't feel like I have given up anything! Good luck!
I am currently eating some vegan mint chocolate now! Ha ... most health food stores keep some nice dark chocolate and most say vegan I've found. So no need to give up chocolate! Perish the thought!
I have only been fully vegan for a month or two but started giving up milk about six months ago ... I did it slowly by keeping rice milk and cows milk in the house but slowly replacing the cows milk with rice milk until I found I wasn't using the cows milk except for guests and now I don't even keep it for them. I now make my own rice and cashew milk! Yum!
I use to like cheese but didn't ever go nuts on it but my recommendation would be to not buy it at all so it's not in the house and so you are forced to find alternatives. I google alot and there are always suggestions from somebody that has already attempted whatever it is you want to make. If you're looking for comfort food, maybe start searching for vegan comfort food you can bake ... that's a fun thing to do and I've found I need practice anyhow with all these new ingredients I've never used before and I feel like at least there's some effort put into a treat ... good luck!
