I'm a vegan in Dunedin, NZ and was wondering if there were any other vegans from NZ on here? It would be really nice to discuss brands and shops, as a lot of American and Australian brands aren't available here. Thanks in advance!

Hiya-

I live in Dunedin and am brand-new to this vegan thing. I have decided that after 28 years I have consumed more than enough animals. I am going to go check out Sew Hoy and the Asian food market tomorrow to see if I can find jackfruit in brine to make pulled 'pork' and cornbread. Also heading to Arthur Barnetts to suss out their cosmetics, thankfully some MAC and Clinique stuff is vegan! There are such awesome vegan cosmetics on this site, does anyone know if Kaia House products are available in NZ stores? good wishes

Hi all!

Grace, so happy to hear a vegan from NZ! I'm from Dunedin, both my fiancee and I are vegans. Have you found it hard to be vegan in NZ with the lack of vegan foods? I feel we miss out somewhat but after a hell of a lot of searching, we discovered that the Weight Watchers Canola Spread (margarine) is vegan! Yay!

Bonsailily, congratulations on becoming a vegan! :) Where in NZ are you? I have no idea about Kaia House but I recommend Sukin moisturiers as they are animal product free (I only use the moisturiser so you will have to check the labels on their other products).

Sorry, just read the first part of your comment Bonsaililly, and realised you said you're from Dunedin. My fiancee and I are from Dunedin too. I recommend Taste Nature, an organic shop/cafe that has a few vegan things, we found Nutritional Yeast there (labeled savoury yeast flakes). I also recommend Centre City New World. We found a few vegan products there, including dairy free chocolate, yay! Its in the international/gluten free/organic isle. How are you finding being vegan? :)

Thanks for your help Jenna, I am loving being vegan! My bf is a committed omni though- he is very reluctant to try any of the vegan treats I make (more for me, I reckon!)

Now that I know where to find nutritional yeast I will be able to make vegan cheese this weekend:) I have been hanging out in the international aisle at NW so much recently haha. Also loving the Kea cookies from there, I used the Double chocolate ones for the base on a cheesecake I made in this weekend, so good! I am also keen to plant some kale, I definitely do not have green thumbs though so I will need to do some homework:)

Pumpkin Seed-Coated Lentil Patties

¾ c brown lentils

2 dried bay leaves

1 t coriander seeds

2 c red onion, cut into chunks (1 large onion)

2 med-large garlic cloves, chopped

½ t salt

1 ½ T apple cider vinegar

1 ½ T mild curry paste

1 ½ c breadcrumbs

¼-1/3 c celery, diced

1/3-1/2 c ground pumpkin seeds (process dry roasted seeds in a food processor until just crumbly, but not nut butter)

In a small amount of water, boil the bay leaves, coriander seeds, lentils, onion and garlic. Remove bay leaves and discard when onion is soft. Transfer mixture to a food processor with the remaining ingredients (except celery and ground pumpkin seeds) and puree until fairly smooth. Transfer mixture to a large bowl and stir in celery. Refrigerate for 1 hour (or more if possible). Place pumpkin seeds on a plate. Take scoops of the lentil mixture, form them into patties and roll in ground pumpkin seeds. Fry.

Hey everyone! Just finished reading TKD book! Alicia is such an inspiration. I am brand spanking new at this and just going through my pantry list of things to buy...superhero all the waaaaay! I live in Wellington. Just got most of my supplies, but boy it took me the whole day just to google things and find out the best places to get everything...umeboshi plums were a mission...and it was my first time ever in an asian food store and was there for more than an hour getting overwhelmed (and getting distracted with everything else....some pretty interesting things lol) and trying to find miso paste...and thats a whole different story. Im soooooo excited about this new journey! Im so glad I found some kiwi's on this site. smiley-smile.gif
