Hi All,

I have been all over the web looking for a simple, vegan, protein rich smootie for after my workouts.

Usually I eat yogurt and drink lots of water, but tomorrow I go vegan. Which means I need some help. I have found receipes that call out for powder, but I am wondering if there are receipes out there that do not call for powders.

If you are vegan and work out hard, what do you drink after your regimen?

Any nutritional help is wanted.

Thanks all!

Funny, I came here to ask almost the same question! I've gone back to a vegan diet and have just started working out again. I really don't like protein powders - they feel fake and weird and often make my stomach hurt. In doing research about protein intake, I've come across tons of conflicting info.

So if Lydeajade doesn't mind, I'd like to add to this thread and second her request for a vegan post-workout smoothie recipe without powder, and also ask the community one other question:

What's with all the protein hype? Does an athletic vegan really needs supplemental protein, or is there a way to just get sufficient protein from the food itself?

Thanks Lydeajade for letting me bogart your thread :)

I've read the best vegan protein powder is Sun Warrior.I haven't tried it,but I really like VEGA protein powder, the shake and go smoothie in Bodiacious Berry flavor.I add some fresh almond milk, water, berries, sometimes soaked figs, papaya, and banana if I have any ripe.

However, don't immediately refuel after exercising! Your body needs to time adjust from workout mode to recuperation-rehydration mode.I usually drink some water, take a shower, then it's been ten minutes and ideal time to consume something.

I went to the local whole foods and asked one of the guys who works in the dietary needs section about this. He said that there is a certain acid (clutamine) that we need for our muscles to feel better after an intense work out. I aslo asked him if he was a vegetarian/ vegan and he said yes. He reccomended Vega because it has esentials that everyone needs and is Vegan.

My husband did some research and it turns out that there are about four things we need after a work out: Electrolytes, Omegas, Sugar and protein. He found a great recipe online that calls out for hemp powder, bananas and tofu. I haven't tried it yet. It makes a pudding.

But I did find a premade drink in the refridgeration section: Sambazon Protein.

I'm going to try it everyday this week after my workout and see how I feel on Sunday(recovery day.)

I'm still looking for a drink that I can make at home without powders. That would be way better then anything pre-processed.

Sometimes after workouts I make myself hemp protein shakes with unsweetened cocoa powder (good source of magnesium, potassium, zinc, etc.), a frozen banana or berries, and almond milk. It takes really good. Chia seeds are great for endurance too.

Be careful with chia seeds-they can lower your diastolic blood pressure too low,so if you have low blood pressure (like me) steer clear of them.So many of these "super foods" are NOT as healthy as claimed!

Everyday after my workout I make a superfood shake. I use Dr. Shultzes Superfood plus (google it) or you could use any green drink powder I suppose. I make it with a cup of orange mango juice, 1 banana, 1 cup frozen berries, 2 Tbls. of Superfood powder, 2 Tbls. flaxseed meal and I've been adding some acidopholous powder lately. It's super good and full of vitamins and omegas. smiley-laughing.gif

I make green smoothies with kale, almond milk, hemp seeds or powder (I like seeds better), and a banana or maybe a little peanut butter. I do use the Vega powders on occasion because you don't need a blender for those.
