Breaking out after getting off birth control

Hello, ladies. I hope I'm not being too repetitive in this post.

I'm 32 now and have been on the pill since I was 16. I am incredibly healthy in every other way (and have been since I was a little kid) and it's just awful to me that I have been on the pill this long because I know it's terrible for me. I originally got on the pill because I had really long, heavy periods, terrible cramps, an irregular cycle, and serious acne. It cleared up all those problems and I've never been dissatisfied with being on the pill. But since I don't like the idea of all the hormones I've tried to get off the pill three times since I was about 25. Each time all my problems came back with a vengence, particularly the acne, which actually is worse now than when I was a teenager. I get painful, cystic acne on my face, chest, and all over my back. My aunt saw me in a bathing suit during one of these trail separations and thought I had the chicken pox!

In case it helps, I've was vegetarian from ages 11 to 28. Since then I have been vegan and mostly macrobiotic. I am not overweight, get regular exercise, and use organic products almost exclusively. I also eat almost entirely organic, drink filtered water and do regular cleanses.

I am going for my annual next week and want to get the copper IUD, which at least will help keep pregnancy at bay. But I don't think it will do anything for my other problems. Have any of you ladies had similar problems to this that you were able to clear up with a particular supplement or set of supplements? I want to know for my own benefit but especially my best friend, who has been on the pill since she was 17 (she's 30 now) for the exact same reasons as me. However, being on the pill makes her super emotional and even sometimes suicidal. I really need to find a solution for her but I'll obviuosly benefit as well.

Thanks! :)

Hi!

I was on birth control for a very long time as well for acne (age 15-24). I had to get off because of all the awful side effects that I was having. In the beginning I too broke out and tried to find a natural solution. Eating vegan macrobiotic helped a lot and using a natural skin care line helped too. But what worked wonders was having a monthy facial. I sought out an esthetician who uses natural products and since then my skin has never looked better. I use raw organic natural skin care products called ISUN, it is amazing. I also take a thyroid support supplement by Gaia called Thyroid support which helps to balance things out. I've also found that decreasing my intake of nuts really helped as well.

Beverly S - Thank you so much for this info! I will definitely look into the thyroid support supplement, among the other things you suggested. I'll be interested to hear what others suggest as well. :)

Hey,

I had taken various different brands of pill from 17-23. Mainly to keep my menstrual cycle regular and stop painful cramps etc. Since stopping the pill I've found that taking supplements really helps my skin and mood. I take vitamin B6, Vit C with zinc and a multi vitamin with iron. Since then I've had no problems with my skin (yayy!). Good luck.
