swapping from "normal" dogfood to vegan dogfood

hi everyone :)

we have a westhighland terrier and she's almost 14 years old, since about 1.5 years she has to take medication for her heart. A few months ago I moved out at my parent's and unfortunately I had to leave her there, but now I will be able to take care of her again, so I will take her to my place quite soon. *yay*

usually I feed her, when I'm at my parent's, some of my food (e.g. rice + vegetables), she totally loves it, but my mother insists to feeding her the standard doogfood (the dried one).

Do you think, I should just change the food I'll feed her without telling mum? I feel very bad, for (kind of) lying about it, but I feel even worse for feeding her meaty food, since I strongly believe that it makes her heart-condition even worse! and can I feed her my normal vegan/trying to be superhero food or is there anything I'd need to supplement??

I tried to talk about it, with my mother several times, but there's no way to change her mind..

Any suggestions are really helpful! xxx

Hi! Im undecided about this myself at the mo too.....the only advice I would give you is if you are feeding her your own food and cooking for her make sure you do your research first as dogs caanot eat everything humans can!! Things like onions, chocolate, caffeine, heated cooking oil, raisins, certain seeds and nuts to name only a few are highly toxic and poisonous to dogs!! Also remember that certain plants are poisonous to them too so they may not be able to eat some veg.

Anyways hope that helps and Id be very interested to hear what you decide! :)

I hope your adding a protein source to your veg & rice.

I use www.v-dog.com which is a well balanced vegan dry kibble. Both my dogs love it they suggest if you have trouble changing over to add pureed sweet potatoe or pumpkin.
