Hello!

I have a question and I'm hoping someone can answer :)

I have a 20 month old who is allergic to a lot of food: tomatoes, nuts, kidney/ pink/ pinto beans, eggs, eggplant, chili powder, seafood and fish and mildly to wheat, dairy and soy. As you can see, she is allergic to nearly all of the protein sources Vegans rely on. Does anyone have any suggestions to protein sources? She can tolerate wheat products. She has had chickpeas and hummus with no issues but I read that chickpeas and other legumes come from the same family as soy so I'm not quite sure what to do.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Thank you!
Kathie

Hi Kathiering:

Your toddler and I share very similiar issues. I empathize with you and your baby. I must first say that I am not totally vegan. I'm about 95 percent vegan as my food allergies and other health issues inhibit me from getting the necessary nutrients in plant based foods that I need. You may not want to hear this, but, you may need to provide lean meat protein to your child for health reasons. I'm not saying you should or that I'm a right about this as your DR is always the expert. This is merely my experience. I'm allergic to all of what you listed in your comment above and much more. Even a nutritionist turned me away as she felt she couldn't offer me more than what I already knew. I cannot eat Quinoa, but, it is an excellent source of protein. I really loved the taste when I tried it and it's great in a variety of recipes. I also can't eat Seitan, but, this is supposed to be a good source of protein too. I hope this helps some.....I'm not sure that Legumes and chickpeasa are related to the soy family. What I"ve read is that those individuals who suffer from the above mentioned allergies typically have a similiar reactions to these products. I know that I have an allergy to them.
