Hey there everyone! This is my first post!
I have finally convinced my mother to switch her dog Al's diet to a vegan one! Woo Hoo! (Al is a big, beautiful German Doberman about 5 years old)
I was wondering if there is a good website or place she could go for guidelines, support, new recipes and stuff like that.
I bought her the only book I could find on the subject but wonder if there is a place Online she could go for fresh information?

Is there a site dedicated to this?

Thank YOU dog lovers!!

AND, Thank you Alicia for this very cool site. I love it that we can all share here!!

Unfortunately, I had a really bad experience feeding my dog a vegan diet. I was using Dr. Harvey's canine health and alternating beans, legumes, tofu for the protein. He loved the food but he's an extremely active dog and he dropped weight even though I was feeding him the recommendations for twice his weight. My vet was supportive of his eating a vegan diet at first, but when she saw how skinny he was she said that it wasn't for him. I'm going to try the Halo vegan dry dog food and hope he's able to maintain his weight. Dr. Harvey's is awesome though and he even took time out to speak with me about my concerns... he's a riot! He does not recommend feeding dogs an exclusively vegan diet. I hope your mom's dog has success with a vegan diet, I'm sure he'll love the taste. Just make sure to check in with vet and possibly have blood tested to make sure he's getting everything he needs nutritionally.

I switched my dog to a vegan diet a couple months ago. After doing some research I decided to feed him V-dog http://v-dog.com/ and he totally loves it. He hasn't had any weight loss and feels great. I don't need to add any protein source because it is completely balanced. I considered using Natural Balance Vegetarian formula (which is actually vegan) but I liked the idea of supporting a company that made exclusively vegan food. Dogs are omnivores like us and should tolerate a balanced vegan diet. However, not every dog tolerates each diet the same way. Morgan, it may not be a bad idea to try a different brand of food for your dog as he may respond better. In case anyone was wondering about cats, they are carnivores and really aren't meant to eat a vegan diet. I am a veterinary nurse and we recently saw a vegan cat that could not heal it's wounds. It went through expensive skin grafting surgeries that kept failing and the veterinarians said it was from not getting the proper nutrition.

2 of my favorite vegan bloggers wrote about making vegan dog food.

Vegan Heartland had a great post about making vegan dog food:

Lindsay of Happy Herbivore wrote this post about making food for her vegan pugs:

Please do not feed corn cobs as recommended in the book, having worked in a vet's office i can tell you that it is dangerous, can cause a blockage and cause their death from choking :(

Hey everybody.
I MUST TELL YOU ALL SOMETHING!!! You guys are awesome! I have gotten some GREAT advice about dog food! And, thanks to you, my mother is now feeding her big Doberman, AL, an all-vegan diet and everybody is happy!

**BECAUSE OF YOU...my mother read your posts and got more excited about the diet. She got him some dog food Online (Vegan kibble) that one of you recommended and made him treats out of the vegan dog food book I got her. Now, she LIKES making his food and is happy that he eats up her cooking! He LOVES the food she makes.

THANK YOU SWEET PEOPLE FOR HELPING US!!!!!
