Hi everyone! I have only recently started eating a vegan diet and my motivation stems from animal rights, rather than health or weight loss. My problem is, I am struggling with my weight big time. I had a baby six months ago, and although I have lost a fair bit of weight since then (10kgs) I have now plateaued. I count calories and are usually under 1200, I don't eat white bread or more than 2 servings of fruit per day. I am slowly walking further and faster, but this week i actually put on 1kg!! I am hoping that someone may have some tips for me. Being fairly new to eating vegan, i wonder if i am making some mistakes in my food choices.

Hi! That is awesome that you have started eating vegan. It has really made a difference for me, as far as weight loss and being healthier. Don't give up, but the weight might come off more slowly than you'd like. I've been a vegan for 15 months, and have lost 35 pounds. I'm a mom of 4 (ages 18-26), grandma of 2, am 45 years old, and 116 pounds. It did come off very slowly for me (about 2-3 pounds per month). I exercised 5 days a week, too (mostly walking and exercise videos, occasional running). I also try to avoid regular sugar. I stick with the unrefined types of sugars.
From your comments, I would first of all think that you are eating too few calories. Your body may think it's in a famine period, and start to hang onto the calories and lower your metabolism. I used to try low-cal diets, and would always regain the weight back later. I once got up to 186 pounds about 6 years ago.
I think you need to add at least 400 or 500 more calories per day, but make sure they are healthy calories from plant-based foods. I have never limited my fruit intake, and try to eat a big salad once a day. 8-9 servings of fruits and veggies per day is one of my goals. I snack on nuts and fruits. As long as I am hungry, I have allowed myself anything I want in the vegan, whole-food category. My "treats" have been a Luna bar once per day, or an Alternative Baking Company cookie once or twice a week. I also have the occasional vegan processed food, such as a boca burger or Smart Dog, and vegan pizza.
My food cravings have changed in the last year to more healthy choices. I haven't been sick, my skin has cleared up, and my eyes look white all the time. I feel more energetic than I did in my 20's.
I look forward to hearing more about your experiences,
Ronda

Weight loss during pregnancy can cause ketosis to take place. This is normally seen when following a high protein diet, such as the Atkins Diet. Ketosis is a process where the body starts breaking down and using fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. Ketones are the end by product of this that develop in the system and can be detrimental and toxic to the developing brain of a fetus. There are dipsticks that can be bought at drug stores that measure the amount of ketones in the urine. Thanks.
